Bulldogs Spoil Senior Day, Hand Braves First Conference Loss of Season

OTTAWA, Kan. – The (RV)Ottawa University men's soccer team suffered their first conference loss of the season to McPherson on Saturday afternoon, spoiling OU's Senior Day with a match that ended in a 3-1 defeat to the Bulldogs.

The game started with the normal flow of most matches, deadlocked for much of the first half. The game favored the Braves when the ball stayed on the ground, but the Bulldogs made the most of their chances in the air. OU's back line looked out of sync on occasions, especially on set pieces. McPherson's size also posed a problem for the Braves on set pieces. That's how McPherson was able to score the opening goal, capitalizing off a corner kick with a goal from 6'4 Abdul Kanu in the 34th minute. The Bulldogs would double their lead just four minutes later, scoring another goal off a corner kick. The Braves went into halftime down 2-0.

The Braves got on track quickly to start the second half, courtesy of a goal from Bence Molnar assisted by Alonso Basauri in the 50th minute. Molnar's goal was the 28th of his OU career, passing Philip Nguyen to become the fifth-leading goal scorer in program history.

Ottawa had another great chance moments later in the 53rd minute, when a volley from Felipe Padierna off a corner kick just went just wide of the post.  The Braves created plenty of chances, but none that truly threatened Bulldog's keeper Colby Swift. Out of eight shots in the second half, only two were on target.  The Bulldogs caught the Braves pressing for the tying goal, getting an insurance with a counterattack goal in the 86th minute that pretty much sealed the game.

Up Next: The Braves face No. 16 Oklahoma Wesleyan on Wednesday. The loss today was a double gut punch for the Braves, since this game had huge KCAC Tournament seeding implications. Ottawa needed to win this game to force a battle for first place against OKWU, now Ottawa is no longer in charge of their own destiny to finish as regular season conference champions. The Braves still have a chance for the No. 1 seed, needing a win against OKWU on Wednesday and hoping for a Kansas Wesleyan upset of OKWU on Saturday.  Regardless of the result against OKWU, the Braves will still finish no worse than third place and host a home first round KCAC Tournament game.
