WICHITA, KAN. – The Ottawa University women's soccer team fell on the road to the Friends Falcons 2-0 on Saturday night in the KCAC Quarterfinal. The loss concludes the 2022 season for the Braves' squad that finished with a 5-7-6 record, but the team showed improvement throughout the year in
Candice Fabry's first season as head coach.
With the two teams that battled so evenly all season, it makes sense that this matchup would be decided by just a penalty kick. The Falcons caught a break in the 35
th minute following an Ottawa foul inside the box, converting from the penalty spot to score the game's opening goal. The Braves went into halftime down 1-0 after the unlucky foul.
Friends doubled their lead in the 61
st minute with a goal from Yairee Perez. Braves' keeper Alondra Carbajal made a great save on Perez's initial shot, but Perez was able to track down the rebound and make the second shot count.
The Braves wouldn't go down without a fight, making things interesting in the last 10 minutes. Following an injury to players from both teams, there was a precarious drop ball situation.
Reighna Werner took a shot following the referee's drop ball, nearly scoring over Friends' Keeper Maria Smyth who made a terrific save. Give credit to Smyth, who made six saves in the contest and single-handedly preserved the Falcon's lead. She had a similar performance in the last match between these two teams, a scoreless 0-0 draw.
The Braves were finally able to get one by Smyth and cut their deficit in half in the 79
th minute with a goal from
Jessenia Velez assisted by
Isabelle Conte. Velez showed her track & field high jumping ability, getting way up for the head from Conte's corner.
The game went down the wire, with the Braves finding one last opportunity with about 30 seconds left. Velez drew a foul in the midfield that earned OU a free kick, sending everyone but the goalie and the free-kick taker into the box.
Reighna Werner was unable to muster up her past magic from similar situations in the past, as the Braves fell 2-1 in the nail biting contest.
