Braves Move On to the Gold Bracket at the NAIA Invitational Championship

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Ottawa University women's flag football team earned its eighth and ninth straight victories on Thursday afternoon at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Ottawa defeated Florida Memorial University 34-7 in game one and then rallied to take a 19-7 victory over St. Thomas University in game two.

Ottawa jumped out to a 13-0 lead over the Lions. Ottawa scored its first touchdown of the game with 2:55 to go in the first quarter. Madysen Carrera scrambled for the eight yard touchdown. The extra point attempt by Clara Beaudoin was good and OU led 7-0.

OU extended its lead with 7:30 to go in the second quarter. Carrera threw a 15 yard touchdown pass to Bailey Hodgins, giving the Braves a 13-0 lead. Florida Memorial cut into the OU lead with 58 seconds left in the half. Ja'shya Christie threw a seven yard touchdown pass to Ericka Johnson. The point after attempt was good and OU's lead was cut to 13-7.

The Braves did not let a little thing like 58 seconds on the clock slow them down. Ottawa marched 66 yards on five plays to find the end zone just before the clock hit zero. Carrera connected on her second touchdown pass of the game, this one to Alyssa Linkous. Hodgins extra point attempt was good and OU took a 20-7 lead into the locker room.

Ottawa extended its lead over the Lions in the second half. Carrera threw a four yard touchdown pass to Addison Orsborn. Beaudoin's extra point attempt was good and OU had a 27-7 lead over Florida Memorial with 6:44 left in the third quarter.

OU scored the final touchdown of the game with 6:34 left in the contest. Carrera completed an eight yard touchdown pass to Jazlyn Camacho. Linkous hauled in the extra point attempt, giving OU the lead and the game 34-7.

  • The Braves finished the game with 266 yards of offense, 53 yards through the air and 213 yards on the ground. OU's defense held Florida Memorial to negative one yard rushing and 193 yards passing.
  • Madysen Carrera led OU with 53 yards rushing and had one rushing touchdown. She went 17-for-21 through the air for 213 yards and four touchdowns.
  • Alyssa Linkous and Jazlyn Camacho led OU with five receptions apiece. Linkous had 102 receiving yards. Linkous, Camacho, and Addison Orsborn had one touchdown reception apiece.
  • Alyssa Gillespie led OU with five tackles. She had one sack and one pass break up.
  • Abby Brown finished the game with four tackles, one interception, and one pass break up.
  • Hailee McKay and Jennifer Anthony both had two pass break ups.
St. Thomas University W, 19-7
The Braves got off to a slow start offensively against the Bobcats of St. Thomas University. STU took the early lead with 9:05 to go in the second quarter. Julianne Yulkowski threw a nine yard touchdown pass to Dejoince Parris. The extra point attempt was good and the Bobcats led 7-0.

Ottawa was able to cut into the lead with eight seconds remaining in the second quarter. Ottawa put together a 6 play, 45 yard drive after a STU punt. Madysen Carrer found an open Alyssa Linkous for the 14 yard touchdown. The extra point attempt was no good and St. Thomas took a 7-6 lead into the locker room.

Ottawa's defense come out with energy at the start of the third quarter, forcing a punt by the Bobcat offense. The OU offense took advantage of the good field position, scoring on a five play, 50 yard drive. Carrera and Linkous connected again, this time for three yards and Ottawa led 12-7 with 5:26 to go in the third quarter.

On the Bobcats' next offensive possession, the Brave defense came away with a turnover. STU drove the ball to the OU 13 yard line. Abby Brown stepped in front of the STU pass for the interception. With the momentum, the Brave offense put together a drive that ended in direct snap to Addison Orsborn for the three yard touchdown. The extra point attempt by Jazlyn Camaco was good and Ottawa led 19-7 at the 7:38 mark on the fourth quarter.

On St. Thomas' next offensive possession, the Bobcats drove the ball down the field and like the last one, it ended in a turnover. The ball was on the OU six yard line. Nina GraveDePeralta stepped in front of the STU receiver and picked off the pass with two minutes to go in the game. The Braves ran out the clock, taking the 19-7 victory.

  • The Braves had 70 yards rushing and 195 yards passing for a total of 265 yards of offense. The OU defense held St. Thomas to 195 yards of offense, five yards rushing and 190 yards through the air.

Ottawa (14-2) will now compete in the Gold Bracket at the NAIA Invitational Championship on Friday, May 13 at 2:00 p.m. (cst). The Braves will play the winner of the Keiser University vs. Warner University game.
