OTTAWA, Kan. – A late goal from
Sidney Johnson in the 87
th minute was not enough for the Ottawa University women's soccer team, falling 2-1 at home to the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes on Friday evening in the 2022 KCAC opener.
Both teams brought the intensity and physicality of a conference matchup from the opening whistle. The first half was dead even, with Ottawa holding a slight 8-7 advantage in shots taken. The Braves were able to get three of those shots on frame, but Coyote's keeper Allison Blumenthal was able to keep the Braves off the board in the first half. Even though the Coyotes took seven shots, Braves' keeper
Willow Good was rarely threatened on frame and made one save in the first half. Both teams headed into the break tied at 0-0.
With plenty of warnings in the first half, the yellow cards came out of the referee's pocket four times in the second half. Majority of the second half was deadlocked like much of the first half. The Coyotes found the first breathrough in the 77
th minute with a goal from Maleia Jackson. KWU would double their lead in the 83th, catching the Braves pushing forward and scoring their goal on a quick counterattack.
Sidney Johnson would get one back from the Braves in the 87
th minute, but it was too little too late for Ottawa as the game ended in a 2-1 loss.
Up Next: The Braves travel to Sterling on Sep. 16
th for a matchup against the Warriors.
