Braves Upset No. 4 Southwestern, 74-72

OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University men's basketball team upset no. 4 Southwestern College in Wilson Field House, 74-72, on Saturday afternoon.

In the first six minutes, the game went back and forth. Tristen Hull's basket at the 14:13 mark tied the game for the fourth time, 12-12.

Southwestern retook the lead, going on a 11-4 run to take a 23-16 lead over the Braves with 9:15 left in the half. Ottawa responded with a 15-7 run, taking a 31-30 lead on a two free throws by Ty Bland.

The Moundbuilders quickly retook the lead on its next trip down the floor but a 3-pt field goal by Elijah Mason gave the Braves a 34-33 lead with 1:51 on the clock. After a Brave defensive stop, Deondre Buggage's basket gave OU a 36-33 lead at the 1:07 mark.

SWC scored the final point of the half on a free throw by Andrew O'Brien and Ottawa took a 36-34 lead into the locker room.

At the start of the second half, Ottawa increased its lead to 46-40. Free throws from Amil Fields gave OU a 53-46 lead at the 12:15 mark.

The Braves continued to hold its lead, pushing it to 10 points, 63-53, on a Buggage basket. Southwestern rallied with a 16-2 run, taking a 69-65 lead over the Braves with 3:14 on the clock.

Ottawa answered with five straight points, retaking the lead 70-69 with a Buggage basket at the 1:14 mark. Southwestern quickly answered with a 3-pt play by Deng Bol, 72-70. That lead did not last long as OU tied the game on its next offensive possession, a Bland basket, 72-72.

After a time out by the Braves, the OU defense came up with a defensive stop and Ian Moore snagged the rebound. Buggage found Hull in the post and his shot found the bottom of the net to give OU the 74-72 lead with 13 seconds on the clock.

SWC's Bol drove the ball to the basket and Moore knocked the ball out of bounds with two seconds on the clock. Ottawa's defense locked down the Moundbuilders in those final two seconds, not allowing a shot attempt and OU took the 74-72 victory.
