OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University men's basketball team finished 2023 with an 86-79 overtime victory over Columbia College in Wilson Field House on Saturday night.
Ottawa found itself down 19-13 to Columbia at the start of the first half. The Braves rallied and with 11:57 on the clock, OU tied the game at 25 all. Columbia responded by scoring six straight points to retake the lead, 31-25.
The Braves answered with a 10-0 run, taking a 35-31 lead on a 3-pt field goal by
AJ Hof with 8:56 left in the first half. The Cougars cut OU's lead to one point, 35-34, but OU ended the half on a 13-4 run to take a 48-38 lead into the locker room.
Columbia cut OU's lead to six points, 50-44, in the opening minutes of the second half. OU was able to push its lead to double digits on threes by
Jayden Hibbitt and
Deondre Buggage, 56-55. Columbia chipped away at the Brave lead and with 10:11 left in the game, CC lead 61-58 over the Braves.
OU did not go away and with 3:26 on the clock, retook the lead 69-68 on a 3-pt field goal by Buggage. Columbia retook the lead on two Collin Parker free throws, 70-69. Ottawa too the lead once more at the 2:19 mark on a Hibbitt jumper and a Buggage basket with 23 seconds on the clock gave OU a 73-70 lead.
On the Cougars' last offensive possession of regulation, they attempted a three with seven seconds on the clock. It was missed but Tommy Hafer tracked down the rebound. Parker connected on a three with two seconds on the clock, tying the game at 73 all to send the contest into overtime.
The Braves scored on their first three offensive possessions of the overtime period to take a 79-75 lead. Columbia cut OU's lead to two points, 79-77 with 2:24 left in the game. The Braves scored the next seven points, to take an 86-77 lead over the Cougars. Columbia scored the final basket of the game at the buzzer, giving the Braves an 86-79 victory.
