RICHARDSON, Texas – The Ottawa University softball team split its double header with the University Texas – Dallas on Saturday afternoon at UTD Softball Field. Ottawa lost game one, 4-3 but bounced back to take game two, 7-4.
Game One
The Comets struck first, taking a 1-0 lead over the Braves in the bottom of the first inning. Ottawa tied the game in the top of the second. On a 1-1 count,
Nayely Delgado hit a home run over the left field fence and the game was tied 1-1.
UTD retook the lead with a run in the bottom of the third, 2-1, and pushed two more runs across home plate in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.
The Braves cut into the Comet lead with a run in the top of the fifth. On the second pitch she saw,
Cierra Faubion hit her first home run of the season and OU was within 4-2.
Neither team scored in the sixth and OU trailed UTD 4-2 in the top of the seventh.
Riley Newbold singled down the right field line.
Allison Kearney doubled to right center, scoring Newbold and OU was down 4-3. That is all the closer the Braves were able to get as the Comets took the 4-3 victory.

Game Two
Ottawa struck first, taking the lead in the top of the first. With two outs,
Allison Kearney reached first on a walk.
Madison Bunfill's single to left gave OU runners on first and second.
Hannah Copeland singled to left center, scoring Kearney to give OU a 1-0 lead. Bunfill moved to third on the Copeland hit and then scored on an error by the UTD center fielder and OU had a 2-0 lead.
The Braves extended its lead over the Comets in the top of the second inning.
Kelcie Kippes doubled to left-center. Reagan hit her first varsity, collegiate home run and OU led 4-0. Newbold walked and after two straight singles by
Katie Enneking and
Allison Kearney, the bases were loaded.
Madison Bunfill singled to right, scoring Newbold to give OU a 5-0 lead.
The Comets cut into the Brave lead with two runs in the bottom of the third, 5-2. Ottawa earned one of those runs back in the top of the fourth. Bunfill singled to left field, scoring Newbold and Ottawa had a 6-2 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Ottawa pushed one more run across home plate. Newbold singled down the left field line. She scored on a single to left by Bunfill, giving OU a 7-2 lead. The Comets cut into the OU lead in the bottom of the sixth with two runs, 7-4.
The Comets were not able to rally in the bottom of the seventh as the Braves slammed the door on any kind of a UTD come back. It was three up and three down and OU took the 7-4 victory.
Inside the Box Score
- Madison Bunfill was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, driving in three runs and scoring one.
- Kelcie Kippes earned her fourth victory of the season, striking out two and only allowing five hits in seven innings.

Ottawa (7-1) returns to the diamond on Wednesday, Feb. 22 in a double header against Columbia College at Alumni Park. Game one of the double header is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
