MARIETTA, Ga. – The Ottawa University women's flag football team opened the 2023 Women's Flag Finals with a 34-6 victory over Midland University on Thursday morning.
The Ottawa defense forced a three and out by Midland to open the game. Five plays later the Braves were in the end zone.
Madysen Carrera threw a 20 yard touchdown pass to
Mya Quinn to give the Braves the early 6-0 lead.
Midland took their second offensive possession of the game and moved the ball to the OU 25 yard line. That is where the OU defense came away with a turnover on downs. On fourth and five,
Abby Brown broke up the pass, giving the Ottawa offense the ball on its own 25 yard line.
The Brave offense was not able to score and turned the ball over on downs, giving MU the ball on the Brave 39 yard line. Ottawa's defense started the possession with a sack by
Susann Kaufmann. Three plays later, the Warriors turned the ball over on downs and OU had the ball on its own 23 yard line.
This time Ottawa was able to find the endzone. The Braves put together an eight play, 57 yard drive that ended with another Carrera touchdown pass to Quinn and Ottawa led 12-0 with 4:20 to go in the second quarter.
The OU defense forced another Midland punt and the Brave offense took over on its own 18 yard line. With a third and 17 on the OU 23 yard line, Carrera connected with
Alyssa Linkous for a 57 yard touchdown. The extra point attempt was good and the Braves took a 19-0 lead into the locker room.
The teams exchanged punts to open the second half and OU had the ball on its own 30 yard line. Six plays later, Carrera and
Jazlyn Camacho connected on a 10 yard touchdown pass. The Braves went for two and Carrera hit an open
Tatiana Dos Santos, giving OU a 27-0 lead.
On Midland's next offensive possession, Ottawa's defense came away with a take away. On the first play of the possession,
Jukanie Washington intercepted Mikaela Nunez's pass and Ottawa took over on the Warrior 17 yard line.
OU took advantage of the short field. Carrera completed a 10 yard touchdown pass to
Mandolyn Scalisi. The PAT attempt was good and with 11:45 left in the game, Ottawa led 34-0.
Midland was able to score on its eighth offensive possession of the game but it was too little too late as the Braves took the 34-6 victory.

Ottawa (15-0) will now play Keiser University at 3:00 p.m. (cst). Keiser is coming off a 19-12 win over Webber International University.
