(22) Women's Volleyball Downs (11) MidAmerica Nazarene, 3-0

OTTAWA, Kan. – The (22) Ottawa University women's volleyball team opened the season with a 3-0; 25-18, 25-17, 25-17; victory over no. 11 MidAmerica Nazarene University on Tuesday night at Bell Family Arena. The win was OU's third straight over the Pioneers and its first win over MNU in Olathe since Sept. 13, 1999.

How it Happened
  • MidAmerica Nazarene jumped out to a 5-1 lead over the Braves in set one. Ottawa chipped away at the deficit and after back-to-back kills by Radaisy Valdez, the Braves had their first lead of the set, 10-9. Kills by Valdez and Chaney Barth increased the OU lead to 15-12. MNU did not go away and rallied to tie the set, 18-18. Ottawa responded with seven straight points to take the set, 25-18.
  • Ottawa scored the first three points of set two. OU increased its lead to 6-2 on a Lillian Holden kill. A Reile Payne kill, three kills by Valdez, and a block by Valdez gave the Braves a 13-5 lead over MNU. The Pioneers cut into the Brave lead and were within 15-12. Ottawa responded with kills by Payne and Valdez to take a 20-15 lead. MidAmerica Nazarene was not able to rally, and the Braves took the 25-17 victory.
  • The Braves started set three on an 11-3 run. A Jontara West kill gave OU a 17-8 lead. Ottawa increased its lead to 21-10 on three straight Ryleigh Sander service aces. MNU attempted to rally and cut the Brave lead to 21-16. Ottawa responded by ending the set on a 4-1 run, taking the 25-17 victory on a Barth kill.

The Braves (1-0) will now travel to Columbia, Mo. for the Hampton Inn Volleyball Classic on Friday, Aug. 25 and Saturday, Aug. 26. OU will open the tournament at 2:00 p.m. against no. 19 Central Methodist University.
