Jones' Game Winner Gives OU A Win Over KCAC Leader Saint Mary, 65-63

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The Ottawa University men's basketball team defeated KCAC leader (RV) University of Saint Mary, 65-63, on Wednesday night at the Ryan Sport Center.

The first 10 minutes of the first half went back and forth with USM leading 17-15 over the Braves. The Spires were able to put some space between themselves and the Braves with a 11-2 run to take a 26-17 lead with 9:45 left in the first half.

Ottawa chipped away at the Saint Mary lead and answered with a run of its own, 15-5, to take its first lead of the game, 32-31, on a Jayden Hibbitt basket. USM scored the next five points to retake the lead, 36-32, with 1:44 remaining in the first half. Ottawa was able to score the final basket of the half, a Deondra Buggage jumper, and USM took a 36-34 lead into the locker room.

Two free throws in the opening seconds of the second half by Najee Jones tied the game at 36 all. USM retook the lead and six points later led 42-36 with 18:32 on the clock.

Ottawa continued to stay within striking distance of the Spires. A basket by Buggage tied the game 54-54 at the 5:52 mark in the second half. The Spires went on a mini run, 9-3, to retake the lead 63-57. But four points from Jones and a basket by Buggage tied the game at 63 apiece with 45 seconds left in regulation.

After a timeout, the Braves came away with a defensive stop and OU had the ball with 33 seconds on the clock. Ottawa was able to execute in the final 30 seconds of the game. Jones connected on the game winning basket with 22 seconds on the clock, giving the Braves a 65-63 lead.

Ottawa's defense came away with the stop in USM's final offensive possession of the game, corralling the rebound off a Spire miss and the Braves took the 65-63 victory.
