Emma Stillings then doubled the away lead before Avila tied the game up with two quick goals.
Peyton Hack is Ottawa's leading goalscorer with three goals, two other players have two goals each.
Riley Smith and
Melissa Grohmann lead in assists with two each.
McPherson is 4-3-3 on the season overall and 2-2-1 in KCAC play.
The Bulldogs are coming off a 6-0 win at home over Bethany on Wednesday.
Alyssa Hill is McPherson's leading goalscorer with four goals, Gracie Speltz is the Bulldogs' assists leader with four.
This is the 34th meeting between the two teams, with Ottawa leading the series 26-6-1.
Last year's contest was a 5-1 road win for Ottawa.
