OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University women's basketball team defeated McPherson College, 77-71, on Saturday afternoon in Wilson Field House.
Ottawa struggled to score in the opening minutes of the first quarter. McPherson led 11-1 over the Braves with 4:49 on the clock. The Braves chipped away at the Bulldog lead. OU held McPherson to seven points of the remainder of the quarter and trailed 18-16 at the end of the first.
Four straight points at the start of the second by
Nora Ford gave OU its first lead of the game, 20-18. An old fashioned 3-pt play by
Sydney Scott increased the OU lead to six points, 26-20 with 6:03 left in the half. McPherson cut the deficit to three points, 29-26 but free throws by Ford gave the Braves a 31-26 lead. The teams exchanged points in the final few minutes of the half and the Braves took a 35-30 lead into the locker room.
At the start of the third quarter, McPherson cut the Brave lead to one point, 39-38. Ottawa immediately answered with a three from
Katelyn Alatini and led 42-38. The Braves increased their lead to eight points, taking a 50-42 lead on a basket by Ford. McPherson, however, ended the third on a 9-2 run and OU led 52-51 at the start of the fourth.
The Bulldogs scored the first two points of the final quarter of play to retake the lead, 53-52. But baskets by
Janiyah Hendricks and Ford gave OU 56-63 lead with 7:03 left in regulation.
McPherson again cut into the OU lead and were within 67-66. After a timeout by OU, Alatini nailed a three and Ottawa led 70-66 with 1:49 left in the fourth. The Bulldogs did not go away and cut OU's lead to one point, 72-71, with 20 seconds remaining in the game.
The Bulldogs were forced to foul, sending OU to the line three times. The Braves were 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the final 20 seconds of the game, taking the 77-71 victory.
