Softball Downs Stering, Falls to Avila

BRANSON, Mo. – The Ottawa University softball team defeated Sterling College 6-3 but fell to Avila University 6-2 to end its run in the KCAC Tournament on Thursday.

Ottawa took the lead in the top of the first inning on a lead off home run by Kara Hafenstine. In the bottom of the second, the Braves increased their lead.

Mallory Dunn singled to center and then moved to third on bunt single by Dev Medina. Zoe Butts doubled, scoring both Dunn and Medina to give the Braves a 3-0 lead. Katie Enneking reached first on an error, moving Butts to third. Hafenstine's infield single scored Butts and OU led 4-0. Ottawa scored two more runs in the inning on a Warrior miscue and the Braves led 6-0.

In the top of the fifth, Sterling cut into the Brave lead with three runs, 6-3. The OU defense shut down the Warriors in the final two innings, taking the 6-3 victory.

Ottawa broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third inning. Alex Genty singled to right center. Megan Kennedy moved her to third with a sacrifice bunt. Macy Roever's infield single scored Genty and the Braves led 1-0. Ottawa increased its lead with a sacrifice fly to let by Addison Spencer and OU led 2-0.

In the bottom of the third inning, Avila tied the game with two runs of its own. The Eagles took their first lead of the game with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, 6-2.

Ottawa was unable to rally in its final three at bats and Avila took the 6-2 victory.
