SALINA, Kan. - After being forced into a goalkeeper change in the 15th minute, Ottawa wasn't able to find a groove in the windy conditions on Saturday, mustering just one shot on goal in a 3-0 loss at Kansas Wesleyan.
The Braves had the better of the possession over the first several minutes of the match, but Kansas Wesleyan had the first shot on goal, a weak header on a corner kick that was easily handled by
Lena-Marie Winkler in the seventh minute.
Ellie Fitzpatrick had the first chance of the match for Ottawa in the ninth minute, as
Laura Quijada found her on a square pass 25 yards out from goal. After turning past a defender, Fitzpatrick let loose an effort that was blocked and controlled by the Coyotes.
Cennet Donahue nearly found another opportunity for the Braves in the 13th minute, earning a free kick on the right side. The senior midfielder was fouled after cutting back and dribbling toward goal, but Ottawa wasn't able to put anything together.
On the counterattack, there was a long ball sent in from the Kansas Wesleyan midfield. Ashlynn Adcock collected for the Coyotes, but Winkler charged quickly off her line hoping to cut off the dribble. A crowd of players converged at the top of the penalty area, with Winkler catching inadvertent contact as she tried to slide and collect the loose ball.
A miscommunication in defense allowed Kansas Wesleyan to strike first, as Kyndel Jones's pass to
Ella Stillings came in with a bit more pace than expected, popping loose on the first touch to the foot of Brooklyn Velotta.
Makena Tapia was able to get a fingertip to the shot, but not enough to make the stop.
Ottawa was able to earn a pair of corner kicks at the tail end of the first half, but that along with a 73rd minute shot by
Melissa Grohmann would be the only offensive chances for the Braves.
The Braves have the midweek off before closing out Homecoming Week with a Sunday tilt against Bethany. Kickoff for the Senior Day match is set for noon.
