Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late Heartbreak at Wilson: Ottawa Falls 73-72 to Kansas Wesleyan

OTTAWA, Kan. — The Ottawa University men's basketball team fell 73-72 to Kansas Wesleyan University in Wilson Field House on Saturday afternoon.

First Half
Ottawa dictated pace and energy from the opening tip, building a 9-4 lead in the first three minutes and never trailing in the half.

Elijah Mason got the Braves on the board early, and a transition finish from Rich Martelly pushed the advantage to 4-0. Adam Barbieri knocked down a three to extend the margin to five, and Ottawa's defensive pressure created steady disruption.

Midway through the half, the Braves found their rhythm from deep and at the line:
  • Micah Willis buried back-to-back three-pointers.
  • Jackson Harding drilled a triple to stretch the lead.
  • Ottawa went 15-of-16 from the free-throw line in the half.
A Jackson Esary bucket at the 5:09 mark gave Ottawa its largest lead at 37-23 — a 14-point advantage that energized the home bench.

Despite a few late turnovers, Ottawa took a 46-36 lead into halftime behind efficient shooting and strong interior defense.

Second Half
Kansas Wesleyan came out aggressive after the break, feeding Evens Appolon inside and getting timely scoring from Caiden Punt and Brandon Avedon.

Ottawa briefly rebuilt a double-digit edge when:
  • Harding scored inside and hit a three.
  • Mason converted a smooth midrange jumper.
  • Tyler finished through contact in the paint.
The Braves led 59-45 with 15:12 remaining.

But Kansas Wesleyan methodically closed the gap:
  • Avedon connected from deep.
  • Punt attacked the paint repeatedly.
  • Second-chance opportunities kept possessions alive.
With under four minutes left, the Coyotes trimmed the deficit to two. Ottawa answered with a Landyn Tyler bucket to go up 70-66, and Mason made it 72-69 with 1:12 to play.
Then came the decisive sequence:
  • Avedon hit a three to cut it to 72-71.
  • After defensive stops and offensive rebounds, Kansas Wesleyan capitalized.
  • With 0:04 on the clock, Punt scored in the paint to give the Coyotes their first lead of the game at 73-72.
