Braves Escape Winfield with 3-3 Draw Against Southwestern

WINFIELD, Kan. – The (RV) Ottawa University men's soccer team escaped Winfield with a 3-3 draw against the Southwestern Moundbuilders on Wednesday night.

Ottawa remains unbeaten in KCAC play with the draw, moving to a 7-0-3 conference record with two games left in the season. Tonight's match was a perfect example of the competitiveness in conference play. Although the Moundbuilders (0-4-5 KCAC) have not won a conference game this season, they went toe-to-toe with one of the KCAC's top teams in the Braves.

It looked like Ottawa would run away with things early, scoring in just the second minute with a goal from Slobodan Novicevic assisted by Zac Wilson. Another 20 minutes went by, and suddenly the Braves found themselves on the back foot following two quick goals from Builders' Mamadou Diarra in the 22nd and 25th minute. Bence Molnar was able to bring the Braves level before half, with a 40th minute strike assisted by Owain Parker.  The sides entered the break tied at 2-2.

Southwestern would once again take the lead in the 63rd minute following a goal from Jack Etheridge. Ottawa didn't panic and continued to possess the ball throughout the rest of the contest. The Braves were finally able to find the equalizer in the 81st minute, following a foul on Francisco Arrua inside the box that set up an Ottawa penalty kick. Molnar stepped to the spot and converted for his 15th goal of the season and more importantly tied the game at 3-3. This was the second time this season that Arrua earned Ottawa a penalty kick in the last 10 minutes of the game, the other was in a late 3-2 win over Tabor on Sep. 28th.

Up Next: The Braves next two games against McPherson and No. 20 Oklahoma Wesleyan will have huge seeding implications for the KCAC Tournament, as all three teams are in the top-three of the KCAC standings.  Ottawa hosts McPherson on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. for Senior Day in the last home game of the regular season.
