Braves Fall to (RV) Kansas Wesleyan, 30-13

OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University football team fell 30-13 to (RV) Kansas Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon at AdventHealth Field.

Kansas Wesleyan struck first, taking the opening drive eight play, 75 yards for the first score of the game. The extra point kick was no good and KWU led 6-0 with 11:44 to go in the first quarter.
Ottawa quickly answered, putting together a seven play, 75 yard drive that ended in a 31 yard touchdown pass from Billy Maples to Gage Keaton. Lewis McMullen's extra point kick split the uprights and the Braves had a 7-6 lead.

OU's defense forced a three and out and the Brave offense took over on its own 39 yard line with 8:24 on the clock. The Braves moved the ball to the KWU 25 yard line, where the drive stalled. OU attempted a 42 yard field goal but the McMullen attempt was blocked.

The teams exchanged punts and Kansas Wesleyan took over on its own 33 yard line at the end of the first quarter. Nine plays and 67 yards later, the Coyotes found the endzone. The extra point attempt was good and KWU led 13-7 with 12:58 to go in the half.

Ottawa's offense moved the ball to the KWU 46 yard line but was forced to punt. On the next Coyote offensive possession, KWU moved the ball to the OU six yard line. OU's defense held on third and goal, forcing a Coyote field goal. The 23 yard attempt by Aaron Main was good, giving Kansas Wesleyan a 16-7 lead.

Neither team was able to find the end zone on its last offensive possession of the half and KWU took a 16-7 lead into the locker room.

Ottawa received the ball to start the second half. OU put together a five play, 69 yard scoring drive that ended in a Malaki Peko 31 yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt was no good and OU was within 16-13 of the Coyotes.

After that touchdown by the Braves, the two teams combined for a total of five punt. The Braves took over on its own 40 yard line with 1:52 to go in the third quarter. Ottawa drove the ball down to the Kansas Wesleyan 28 yard line and brought on its field goal unit for a 45 yard field goal attempt. The kick by McMullen was wide left and KWU had the ball with 12:08 left in the game.

The Coyotes put together a three play scoring drive and after the extra point attempt, OU was down 23-13. The OU offense was forced to punt again on its next offensive possession. KWU put the game away on its next drive. The Coyotes found the endzone, taking a 30-13 lead on a Main extra point kick.

Ottawa was not able to rally in the final 5:09 of the game as Kansas Wesleyan took the 30-13 victory.

  • OU finished the game with 235 yards of offense, 165 yards passing and 70 yards rushing. Kansas Wesleyan had 158 yards passing and 319 yard rushing for a total of 477 yards of offense.
  • Billy Maples threw for 160 yards, 14-for-32, and one touchdown.
  • Malaki Peko rushed for 60 yards on nine attempts and scored one touchdown.
  • Gunnar Madere, Jermaine Ziegler, and Gage Keaton had two receptions apiece. Keaton had a touchdown reception.
  • AJ Hemphill led OU with 14 tackles. He had one pass break up.
  • Jensen Riffel had 10 tackles.
  • Santino Gee and Saamad Ali finished the game with nine tackles.

Ottawa (1-7, 1-7) returns to the gridiron on Saturday, Nov. 5 against Sterling College at AdventHealth Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
