OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University men's basketball team earned its second straight victory with an 82-74 come from behind victory over Haskell Indian Nations University on Saturday night in Wilson Field House.
Haskell took the lead to start the game. Ottawa stayed close and was within 18-17 after a basket by
Deondre Buggage. HINU scored the next five points, taking a 23-17 lead over the Braves.
The Indians continued to attack the basket, pushing its lead to 28-19 with 6:26 to go in the half. Haskell increased its lead to 10 points, 41-31 with less than a minute to go in the first half.
The Braves were able to get the defensive stop and
Amil Fields' basket with 16 seconds on the clock cut the deficit to 41-33. Ottawa came away with its second straight defensive stop in the final seconds of the half with
Ricardo Zambrano stealing the ball as the halftime buzzer sounded and Haskell had a 41-33 lead at the half.
Ottawa came out with more defensive intensity in the second half, chipping away at the HINU lead. The Braves outscored Haskell 27-18 in the first eight minutes of the second half, taking a 60-59 lead on a 3-pt field goal by Fields.
A basket by Buggage, after another Brave defensive stop, gave the Braves a 62-59 lead. Haskell did not wilt and rallied to retake the lead, 69-68, with 7:05 left in regulation. Ottawa retook the lead on two
Elijah Mason free throws, 70-69 and a basket by
Tristen Hull gave OU a 72-69 lead at the 5:19 mark.
That last rally by Haskell was the closest HINU would get to the Braves in the final minutes of the contest. Ottawa was able to close out the contest, taking the 82-74 victory.
