OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University women's basketball team opened conference play with a 68-51 victory over York University in Wilson Field House on Wednesday night.
Hailey Henry scored the first points of the game, giving OU a 2-0 lead. York hit a 3-pt field goal on its next trip down the floor, taking a 3-2 lead over the Braves. Baskets by
Ahoneste Walker and
Maria Moore gave Ottawa a 7-3 lead with 7:36 left in the first.
York scored four straight to tie the game at 7-7. Four straight points by
Cierra Brown and a basket from
Jayla Johnson gave OU a 13-7 lead. York cut OU's lead to 13-9 with 2:37 remaining in the quarter. The Braves answered by scoring the final five points, taking an 18-9 lead into the second.
Ottawa opened the second quarter on a 12-2 run, taking a 30-11 lead over York on a 3-pt field goal by
Katelyn Alatini. York was not able to cut OU's back to single digits in the final minutes of the half and OU took a 36-23 lead into the locker room.
York came out firing in the third quarter, cutting OU's lead to 36-32 with a 9-0 run. Ottawa answered with a run of its own, 16-4, and took a 52-36 lead over York on a basket by Brown with 4:15 left in the third. Ottawa continued to attack the York defense and had a 64-42 lead at the start of the fourth.
Not a lot of scoring happened in the final quarter of play. York outscored the Braves 9-4, but it wasn't enough as OU took the 68-51 victory.
