WFF: Braves Capture KCAC Championship with Victory over Kansas Wesleyan, 45-19

OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University women's flag football team defeated Kansas Wesleyan University 45-19 on Friday night at AdventHealth Field. The win clinched the Braves second straight KCAC Championship and ran its record to 9-2 overall and 7-0 in the KCAC.

The Braves deferred to the second half and KWU drove the ball to its own 39 yard line. Facing a fourth and one, the Coyotes went for it. Randrea Gamble tackled the runner one yard short of the first down and OU took over.

Ottawa took advantage of the good field position and moved the ball to the KWU 12 yard line. Madysen Carrera connected with Jazlyn Camacho for the touchdown and Ottawa led 6-0 with 5:02 left in the first quarter.

The OU defense gave the Braves back the ball one play later. On series of laterals, Jennifer Anthony stepped in front of one and snagged the ball out the air. Three plays later Carrera found Clara Beaudoin for the nine yard touchdown pass. The PAT attempt by Beaudoin was good and Ottawa led 13-0 with 3:32 remaining in the first quarter.

Ottawa's defense forced a KWU punt and Ottawa took over on its own 13 yard line. The Brave offense was not able to score this time and OU turned the ball over on downs with 8:59 to go in the second quarter.

The Coyotes cut into OU's lead on its next offensive possession, scoring on a 48 yard touchdown pass from Brianna Hernandez-Silva to Angel Roman. The extra point attempt was no good and with 8:17 left in the half, Ottawa's lead was cut to 13-6.

The Braves didn't waste anytime answering KWU's score with one of their own. Six plays and 66 yards later Carrera scrambled for the nine yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt by Bailey Hodgins was good and the Braves led 20-6 with 4:46 remaining in the second quarter.

On the KWU next offensive possession, the Coyotes drove the ball to the OU 23 yard line. Alyssa Gillespie came away with the stop on fourth and three to give OU the ball with 1:02 left in the half.
The Braves were in hurry up mode and on first and 17 on the KWU 17 yard line, Carrera found an open Addison Orsborn. She ran past the KWU defense and found the endzone with 00:00 on the clock. The extra point attempt was no good and Ottawa took a 26-6 lead into the locker room.

The Braves marched down the field to open the second half. Carrera connected with Orsborn again for the touchdown, giving Ottawa the 32-6 lead with 9:36 left in the third quarter.
The OU defense held KWU on its first offensive possession of the second half, giving the Brave offense the ball on its own 31 yard line. Ottawa was not able to find the endzone as the Carrera pass was intercepted by Roman.

Kansas Wesleyan scored two plays later. Hernandez-Silva found the endzone on a quarterback scramble. The extra point attempt by Hernandez-Silva was good and OU's lead was 32-13 with 1:34 left in the third.

It took Ottawa 49 seconds to find the endzone on its second touchdown of the third quarter. Carrera found an open Orsborn and she did the rest. Orsborn outran the KWU defense for the 60 yard touchdown. The Camacho PAT attempt was good and the Braves led 39-13 with 45 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Kansas Wesleyan scored at the beginning of the fourth on a Ja'Daa Wilson lateral from Hernandez-Silva. The extra point attempt was no good and the Braves had a 39-19 lead with 8:11 remaining in the game.

The Braves found the endzone once more to extend its lead over the Coyotes. Sidney Rood entered the game at quarterback for the Braves. She threw a 26 yard touchdown pass to Camacho to give Ottawa a 45-19 lead.

On the Coyotes last offensive drive of the game, they went for it on fourth and one from their own 39 yard line. Hernandez-Silva's pass to Wilson was incomplete and the Braves took the 45-19 victory.
