BELLEVUE, Neb. – The Ottawa University women's volleyball team opened the GoSarpy.com Labor Day Classic with a 3-0; 25-22, 25-16, 25-19; victory over Valley City State University at the Lied Activity Center on Thursday night.
How it Happened
- Valley City State had an early 7-5 lead over the Braves in set one. Ottawa scored the next three points on a kill by Alexa Boyle and two straight service aces by Kennedi Wyrick to take an 8-7 lead. The teams exchanged points and VCS had a 16-15 lead over the Braves. OU put three straight points on the scoreboard, retaking the lead 18-16. The Vikings rallied, and tied the set at 21-21. Ottawa responded by scoring the next two points on two VCS attacking errors to take a 23-21 lead. After a Viking timeout, Radaisy Valdez's kill gave OU set point, 24-21. Valley City State scored the next point to cut OU's lead to 24-22. Ottawa answered with a kill by Boyle, taking set one, 25-22.
- In set two, VCS took a 5-1 lead over the Braves. The Vikings pushed their lead to 9-3. Trailing 11-6 to the Vikings, Ottawa went on a 13-3 run to take a 19-14 lead. The Vikings scored the next two points, cutting OU's lead to 19-16. That was the last point VCS scored for the set. Ottawa ended the set with six straight points, taking a 25-16 victory.
- Ottawa started set three off slow and found itself down 5-1 to VCS. The Braves then went on a run, behind the serving of Jadore Hayes, to take a 10-5 lead. The Vikings never threatened Ottawa's lead and the Braves took the 25-19 victory.
