Braves Trip Up #RV Saint Mary, 3-0

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The Ottawa University women's volleyball team defeated nationally ranked, University of Saint Mary, 3-0; 26-24, 25-17, 25-16; on Tuesday night at the Ryan Sports Center. The win was OU's seventh straight against USM. Ottawa's victory was also career win no. 300 for head coach Melissa Blessington.

How it Happened
  • Saint Mary took the early 3-1 lead over the Braves in set one. Ottawa answered with three straight points, taking a 4-3 lead on a Radaisy Valdez kill. The Braves continued to hold its lead over the Spires and after a block by Lillian Holden, Ottawa led 17-12. USM rallied, cutting OU's lead to 18-17. A kill by Elli Rogers gave OU a 19-17 lead. USM scored the next two points, tying the set 19-19. The teams exchanged points and after a kill by Valdez, OU lead 23-22. USM against responded, scoring the next two points to take a 24-23 lead. The Braves did not fold, scoring three straight points to take the set 26-24.
  • Two straight attacking errors by USM gave OU a 6-5 lead in set two. Ottawa increased its lead to 12-8 on a kill by Alexa Boyle. After a USM timeout, Ottawa increased its lead to 18-10 on another Boyle kill. Saint Mary was not able to stage a comeback and Ottawa took the 25-17 victory.
  • In set three, the Braves rushed out to an 8-3 lead over the Spires. USM cut into the Brave lead and were within 10-7. A kill by Haylee O'Meara and a USM attacking error gave OU an 18-14 lead. The Braves held USM to two points for the remainder of the set, taking the 25-16 victory.

  • Radaisy Valdez led OU with 12 kills. She had three blocks.

Ottawa (10-8) will take its six match winning streak on the road on Saturday, Oct. 1 to Hastings, Neb. The Braves will play no. 4 University of Jamestown at 3:00 p.m. and Hastings College at 5:00 p.m.
