Football Travels to Avila on Saturday

The Braves defeated Sterling College, 55-17, last Saturday at AdventHealth Field to run its winning streak to three games. Ottawa finished the game with a total of 432 yards of offense, 155 yards through the air and 277 yards rushing. Sterling had 191 yards of offense, 70 yards passing and 121 yards rushing.

Wynton Ruth rushed for over 100 yards for the third straight game in the win over Sterling. He finished with 102 yards rushing on 10 attempts, averaging 10.2 yards per carry. In the last three games, Ruth is averaging 132.3 yards rushing per game, for an average of 7.7 yards per carry.

Through eight games this season, Ottawa is averaging 356.9 yards of offense per game. The Braves are rushing for 210.1 yards per game are averaging 146.8 yards passing per game. The offense is averaging 28.9 points per game. Opponents are averaging 367 yards of offense per game, 225.3 rushing and 141.8 yards passing. They are scoring 28.9 points per game.

During Ottawa's three game winning streak, the Braves are outscoring opponents 123 to 47 (41-15.7). OU is averaging 458.3 yards of offense per game and holding opponents to 282. The Braves are holding opponents to 23.5 percent in third down conversions. Ottawa is also running the ball well, averaging 6.4 yards per carry and averaging 290.7 yards on the ground per game. Opponents are averaging 170 yards rushing per game.

Billy Maples leads the Braves in passing. He is 96-for-184 for 1,110 yards and 10 touchdowns to five interceptions. Maples is averaging 138.8 passing yards per game. Wynton Ruth is OU's leader in rushing with 714 yards on 114 carries. He is averaging 6.3 yards per carry, has scored six touchdowns, and is averaging 89.3 yards rushing per game. Jayden Johnson leads Ottawa in receiving with 29 receptions for 404 yards and three touchdowns. The freshman is averaging 50.5 receiving yards per game. AJ Hemphill leads OU with 91 tackles. He has two pass break ups and one recovered fumble. Kyle Reynolds is second on the team in tackles with 61. He is OU's leader in interceptions with three.

The Braves are 0-5 against Avila and has a record of 0-3 against the Eagles at The Z. The first meeting between the two teams happened on Oct. 20, 2018 in Kansas City, Mo. Avila defeated Ottawa 25-21. The Eagles won last year's contest, 39-9 at The Z.

The Braves won the program's 590th game with the 55-17 victory over Sterling last Saturday. Ottawa is third all-time in the NAIA in program wins behind no. 1 Baker's 643 wins and no. 2 Missouri Valley's 639.

Avila University is 2-6 overall and 1-1 in the Bissell Division of the KCAC. The Eagles are 0-4 at The Z this season. AU snapped its six game losing streak with a 35-17 victory over Tabor College last Saturday in Hillsboro.

Through eight games this season Avila is averaging 347.8 yards of offense per game, 114.6 rushing and 233.1 passing. The Eagles are scoring 26.4 points per game. Opponents are scoring 38.1 points per game and averaging 448.5 yards of offense per game, 258.9 on the ground and 189.6 through the air.

Eli Williams leads Avila in rushing and passing. The sophomore quarterback is 165-for-304 through the air for 1,851 yards and 16 touchdowns. He is completing 54.3 percent of his passes and has thrown six interceptions. Williams has rushed for 334 yards on 94 attempts, averaging 3.6 yards per carry. He has scored seven touchdowns but has fumbled six times carrying the ball this season.

Robert Brooks leads AU in receptions with 28. He has 302 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Dennis Johnson is the Eagles' leader in tackles with 70. Gavin Hambree is second on the team in tackles with 45.Trevon Miller leads AU in interceptions with five.

Avila has had two kickers make an appearance this season. Dylan Globe is 1-for-1 in field goal attempts and 11-for-16 in extra point attempts. Gary Elder is 4-for-5 in extra point attempts. The Eagles have only attempted one field goal this season.

The Eagles are ranked 19th in the NAIA in passing yards (1,865), 29th in passing yards per game (233.1), 22nd in passing touchdowns (17), and eighth in passing first downs (96).

In home games this season, Avila is averaging 22.3 points per game. On the road, however, the Eagles are scoring 30.5 points per game.
