Braves Sweep Hastings

OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University softball team opened its 2023 season with a two game sweep of Hastings College on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Park. Ottawa won game one, 8-0, in six innings and took game two, 4-3.

Game One
The Braves broke the game open in the bottom of the third inning. Ottawa took advantage of Hastings' miscues, scoring seven runs on five errors and three hits.

That is where the score stayed until the bottom of the sixth. Katie Enneking led off the Braves bottom half of the inning with an infield single. Allison Kearney followed that with a single to right, moving Enneking to second. Madison Bunfill hit a double to left, scoring Enneking to give OU an 8-0 victory.

  • Katie Enneking went 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring twice.
  • Ashlynn Mercer pitched six innings, striking out seven and only allowing four hits.
Game Two
Ottawa took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Riley Newbold led the inning off with a double to center. She then moved to third on a passed ball. Allison Kearney scored Newbold from third with a sacrifice fly and the Braves led 1-0.

Madison Bunfill walked and then moved to second on a single to center by Kara Hafenstine. Hannah Copeland scored both with her double to left, giving Ottawa a 3-0 lead.

The Braves extended their lead over the Broncos in the bottom of the fourth. Kelcie Kippes hit a home run to straight away center field and OU had a 4-0 lead.

Hastings tried to rally, scoring two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh. Loralei Gilbert entered the game in the seventh, earning the save and OU took the 4-3 victory.

Ottawa (2-0) returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at Alumni Park against Haskell Indian Nations University. Game one of the double header is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
