KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Ottawa University men's basketball team took a 75-74 victory over Avila University in Mabee Field House on Wednesday night. The game went back and forth with nine ties.
Braves led 22-18 with 9:29 left in the first half after two
Ty Bland free throws. Avila scored the next five points, taking a 23-22 lead over OU. The teams exchanged baskets and with 6:25 left in the half, the game was tied at 25 all.
Three minutes later, two free throws by
Elijah Mason tied the game for the seventh time, 36-36. The Eagles scored the next four points, taking a 40-36 lead with 1:52 remaining in the first half. Ottawa responded two straight 3-pt field goals, one by
Gavin Hooper and the other by
Ricardo Zambrano, to take a 42-40 lead into the locker room.
The Braves increased their lead to 48-42 at the start of the second half. Avila did not let the Braves build upon their lead and with 9:56 on the clock, the game was tied 59-59.
Five straight points by
Amil Fields gave OU a 64-59 lead. The Eagles rallied, taking a 71-68 lead over the Braves with 4:18 left in the half. Ottawa responded with seven straight points and led 75-71 on a basket by Bland at the 2:22 mark.
Avila cut OU's lead to 75-74 with 53 seconds left in the game. After timeouts by both teams, Ottawa's shot attempt was no good and Avila had the ball with 24 seconds on the clock. The Braves came up with the defensive stop but was not able to corral the rebound and Avila had the ball with just under a second on the clock.
The Eagles final shot attempt was no good and the Braves took the 75-74 victory.
