Braves Hang With Track & Field's Best at 100th Anniversary of KU Relays

OTTAWA, KS - Ottawa University's track and field team displayed outstanding performances at the 100th Anniversary Kansas Relays, held from April 13-15, 2023. The Ottawa Braves showcased their skills in various events, setting personal records and earning impressive placements amongst some of the best competition in collegiate track & field. 
 
Day 1
In the Women's Hammer Throw, Deja Delaine secured 14th place with a distance of 44.5m, while Sydney Raborn claimed 18th place with a throw of 38.74m.
 
In the Women's 800m, Destiny Escobar narrowly missed her personal record by one second, clocking in at 2:28.03s, and Jennae Ramirez finished at 2:47.39s.
 
Day 2 
The Braves began the day with remarkable performances in the Women's 100m Hurdles, with JayOnna Perry achieving a personal record of 14.64s and Jessenia Velez setting a new personal record of 16.22s. In the Men's 110m Hurdles, Kayron Johnson narrowly missed his personal record by half a second, finishing at 15.69s.
 
In the Women's 100m, Mumina Millington was just .04 seconds shy of her personal record, finishing at 12.58s. Jaylan Washington set a new personal record of 10.32 seconds in the Men's 100m.
 
In the Women's Shot Put Final, Laurel Barber secured fifth place with a distance of 13.20m (43-3 ¾ feet).
 
JayOnna Perry competed in the Women's 400m Hurdles and finished at 1:03.34s, while Destiny Escobar and Jessenia Velez finished at 1:08.78s and 1:15.56s respectively. Kayron Johnson set a personal record of 54.52s in the Men's 400m Hurdles.
 
In the Women's Javelin Throw Final, Laurel Barber achieved a distance of 41.70m (136-10 feet), finishing in second place. 

 Mumina Millington finished the Women's 400m in 14th place out of 28 with a time of 1:00.03s.
 
The Women's 4x100 Relay team consisting of Juliet Lane, JayOnna Perry, Jordyn Weems, and Mumina Millington secured the 8th place with a time of 49.91s. In the Men's 4x100 Relay, Jaylan Washington, Cameron Jackson, Jahkoby Franklin, and Santino Gee finished in 42.75s.
 
Day 3
There were several OU athletes that advanced to the final of their respective events on the third and last day of the meet. Jacob Ludwick set a personal record of 61.94m (203-2 feet) in the Men's Javelin Throw Final, finishing in second place.
 
The Women's 4x100 Relay team, comprising of Jessenia Velez, JayOnna Perry, Jordyn Weems, and Mumina Millington, achieved a personal record of 49.21s, securing the 6th place.
 
In the Men's 100m Final, Jaylan Washington secured the 3rd place with a time of 10.46s. JayOnna Perry competed in the Women's 400m Hurdles Final, finishing in fourth place with a time of 1:05.25.

"I'm really happy with our performance this weekend," said head coach Jim Whittaker. "Competing at the highest level such as a meet like this pushed us to hang with top-class competition. Heck, there were even Olympians in some of our flights. The wind was a little difficult this weekend, but our athletes just shrugged it off and still came out with some personal records. I would also like to thank former Ottawa T&F coach and current Director of Meets at KU, Tim Byers, for setting up such a wonderful event."
