Women's Flag Wins 3rd Straight KCAC Tournament Title, Downs KWU 34-14

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Ottawa University women's flag football team won its third straight KCAC Tournament championship on Saturday afternoon at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. Ottawa defeated Kansas Wesleyan University 34-14 in the championship game.

The Braves scored on its first four offensive possessions of the game. OU received the ball to start the contest. Six plays and 66 yards later, Madysen Carrera ran the ball in from two yards out for the touchdown. The extra point attempt was good and with 8:51 to go in the first quarter, Ottawa led 7-0.

The Ottawa defense forced a Coyote punt and Ottawa took over on its own 28 yard line. OU put together another scoring drive, one that ended with a 10 yard touchdown pass from Carrera to Jazlyn Camacho. Carrera's extra point attempt was good and Ottawa had a 14-0 lead over KWU with 2:18 left in the first quarter.

A second straight punt by the Coyotes gave OU the ball on its own 39 yards line with 11:51 left in the first half. Ottawa dinked and dunked the ball down the field, eating over four minutes on its third scoring drive of the game. Carrera ended the drive with a five yard touchdown pass to Mya Quinn. The extra point attempt was good and the Braves had a 21-0 lead.

Kansas Wesleyan got on the scoreboard at the 2:43 mark in the second quarter. Brianna Hernandez-Silva threw a two yard touchdown pass to Kendra Velasquez-Munro. The extra point attempt by Hernandez-Silva was good and KWU was within 21-7 of the Braves with 2:43 left in the first half.

That score did not last for long. Two plays later, Carrera connected with Tatiana Dos Santos for the 65 yards touchdown. The extra point was good and the Braves took a 28-7 lead into the locker room.

The Coyotes received the ball to start the second half and it did not take long for them to make a dent into OU's lead. Kansas Wesleyan took its first offensive possession of the second half down the field, ending with a Hernandez-Silva touchdown pass to Ja'Daa Wilson. The extra point attempt was good and the Brave lead was cut to 28-14 with 8:25 left in the third quarter.

Ottawa move the ball to the KWU 10 yard line on its first offensive possession of the second half. On fourth and 10, Carrera was sacked and the Coyotes took over on their own 18 yard line.
On KWU's second offensive possession of the third quarter,  the Coyotes drove the ball to the Ottawa 26 yard line. That is where the Brave defense came away with its fifth stop of the game. OU forced a turnover on down the Brave offense took over. Ottawa again moved the ball down the field and on third and nine from the KWU nine yard line, an interception by Carrera gave KWU the ball on the 14 with 5:35 left in the game.

Ottawa's defense came up big, getting another stop on a fourth and six. KWU had the ball on its own 36 yard line. Susann Kaufmann sacked Hernandez-Silva, giving the Braves the ball on the KWU 30 yard line with 3:07 on the clock. OU ended the game on its next offensive possession. A direct snap to Addison Orsborn moved the ball to the KWU nine yard line. A carry by Randrea Gamble gave the Braves the ball on the KWU three yard line. Ottawa ended the game on the next play, another direct snap to Orsborn. She ran the ball in from three yards out and the Braves took the game, 34-14.

  • Ottawa finished the game with 399 yards of offense, 54 rushing and 345 passing. The OU defense held KWU to 200 yards of offense, 63 yards rushing and 137 yards passing.
  • Addison Orsborn led OU with 31 rushing yards and one touchdown.

  • Carrera went 26-for-36 through the air for 326 yards and three touchdowns. She had two interceptions.

Ottawa (14-0) will now play in the NAIA National Championship Tournament in Atlanta, Ga., May 18 through May 20.
