(14) Women's Volleyball Defeats Nationally Ranked Loyola and Dakota Wesleyan

BELLEVUE, Neb. –  The (14) Ottawa University women's volleyball team bounced back from its two losses on Friday, taking wins over (RV) Loyola University and (RV) Dakota Wesleyan University at the GoSarpy.com Labor Day Classic on Saturday.

How it Happened
  • Ottawa opened set one by scoring four straight points. The Braves increased their lead on kills by Lillian Holden and Reile Payne, 12-5. The Wolf Pack rallied and cut OU's lead to 21-19. OU responded with two straight points, taking a 23-19 lead on Ryleigh Sander's service ace. Loyola scored the next two points to cut OU's lead to 23-21. But a kill by Kira Cherry and a Kennedi Wyrick service ace closed out set for the Braves, 25-21.
  • The Braves took the early 4-2 lead in set two. Loyola rallied and scored the next three points to take a 5-4 lead. The teams exchanged points and OU took a 10-9 lead on a Wolf Pack attacking error. Loyola responded with four straight points, to take a 13-9 lead over the Braves. Ottawa answered and six points later, the Braves lead 15-13. Loyola retook the lead, going on an 8-3 run, to take a 21-18 lead over OU. Ottawa was not able to rally and the Wolf Pack took the 25-20 victory.
  • Ottawa scored the first four points of set three. The Wolf Pack answered with a 9-3 run, taking a 9-7 lead over OU. The Braves responded with a run of their own, taking a 15-12 lead on a Loyola attacking error. Kills by Cherry and Chaney Barth gave OU a 19-13 lead. The Braves did not allow the Wolf Pack to rally, ending the set on kill from Radaisy Valdez and Blythe Monson, 25-17.
  • With Loyola leading set four, 11-10, Ottawa scored the next five points to take a 15-11 lead. The Braves increased their lead over the Wolf Pack on kill by Cherry and Carson Schuman, 17-12. OU held Loyola to three points for the remainder of the set, taking the 25-15 victory.

  • Ottawa finished the match with 54 kills, a .215 attacking percentage, 49 assists, eight service aces, 70 digs, and seven team blocks.
  • Two Braves had double digit kills. Radaisy Valdez finished the match with 14 kills and Chaney Barth had 11 kills. Valdez had four blocks.
  • Madison Brauner had a double-double. She had 16 assists and 14 digs. Ryleigh Sander led OU with 27 assists.

How it Happened
  • Ottawa took the early 4-1 lead over Dakota Wesleyan in set one on a block by Lillian Holden and Kira Cherry. Kills by Blythe Manson and Reile Payne increased the Brave lead to 9-3. OU increased its lead to 17-9 on kills by Cherry and Chaney Barth. Dakota Wesleyan cut into OU's lead and got within 24-18. The Braves ended the set on the next point, taking the 25-18 victory on a kill by Holden.
  • In set two, Ottawa rushed out an early lead, taking the 7-2 advantage on a block by Holden and Cherry. OU pushed its lead to 14-7 on two straight Tiger miscues. The Braves held Dakota Wesleyan in check for the remainder of the set, taking the 25-15 victory.
  • Dakota Wesleyan took an early 5-2 lead over the Braves in set three. OU rallied, taking a 12-10 lead on kills by Holden and Valdez and a DWU attacking error. Ottawa increased its lead to 20-16 after kills by Barth and Manson. The Tigers never threatened the Brave lead and OU took the 25-19 victory.
