OTTAWA, Kan. – The (14) Ottawa University women's volleyball team fell in a hard fought five set match; 21-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-23, 7-15; to no. 7 Missouri Baptist University on Thursday evening in Wilson Field House.
How it Happened
- Missouri Baptist took a 10-5 lead over the Braves in set one. Ottawa chipped away at the Spartan lead and after a block by Reile Payne and Radaisy Valdez, Ottawa was within 13-10. The Braves continued to stay within striking distance and a kill by Blythe Manson put OU within 20-19. Missouri Baptist answered with two straight points, taking a 22-20 19 lead. OU was not able to respond and MBU took the 25-21 victory.
- In set two, MBU had a 17-14 lead over the Braves and OU took a time out. Ottawa came out of the time out on a 6-0 run, taking a 20-17 lead on a block by Lillian Holden. Kills by Valdez and Katelyn Elstun increased the OU lead to 24-19. MBU scored the next point to cut OU's lead to 24-20. The Braves ended the set on the next point, a Valdez kill, 25-20.
- Ottawa fell behind early in set three and trailed 13-9 to MBU. The Braves scored the next four points to get within a point, 14-13. The Spartans responded with a 9-2 run, to take a 23-15 lead. The Braves did not go away and after a Valdez block, Ottawa was trailed 24-19. That is all the closer OU would get as MBU took the 25-19 victory.
- Kills by Chaney Barth and Manson gave OU an 8-3 lead over Missouri Baptist in set four. MBU rallied, taking an 11-10 lead. Ottawa answered with a 7-3 run, taking the lead 17-14 on a kill by Valdez. The Spartans responded with a run of their own, this one 5-1, and retook the lead 19-18. OU scored the next two points, to take the lead on back-to-back Barth kills, 20-19. MBU scored the next point to tie the set at 20. Ottawa answered with three straight points, taking a 23-20 lead on a Carson Schuman service ace. The teams exchanged points and the Braves had a 24-21 lead over the Spartans. MBU tried to rally and scored the next two points to cut OU's lead to 24-23. Ottawa ended the set on the next point, an Elstun kill, to take the 25-23 victory.
- The Braves had a 4-2 lead to open set five. The Spartans scored the next three points, taking a 5-4 lead over OU. Ottawa tied the set on a Barth kill, 5-5. Missouri Baptist responded by scoring the next seven points to take a 12-5 lead over the Braves. Ottawa was not able to rally and MBU took the 15-7 victory.
