(RV) Men's Volleyball falls to Missouri S&T But Rebounds to Defeat Brescia, 3-2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PARKVILLE, Mo. – The Ottawa University men's volleyball team went 1-1 on the final day of the Pirate Invitational on Saturday. OU fell 3-0 to Missouri S&T but rebounded to take a 3-2 victory over Brescia University. The win was OU head coach Ashan Jordan's first career collegiate coaching victory.

How it Happened
  • Set one went back and forth with the Braves taking a 13-12 lead after a kill by Akeil Williams. The Miners scored the next three points, taking a 15-13 lead over the Braves. Missouri S&T continued to build upon its lead and led 19-14. Ottawa tried to rally. Kills by Max Baumann and Grant Younie cut the deficit to 19-16. OU, however, was not able to complete the come back and the Miners took the 25-20 victory.
  • OU fell behind early in set two, 5-2. The Braves chipped away at the deficit and put together a 5-1 run to take the 7-6 lead. The Miners responded with a run of their own and retook the lead 11-8. Ottawa quickly answered, tying the set on a block by Grant Younie and Williams. Missouri S&T retook the lead, but Ottawa again tied it, this time at 17 all on a Miner service error. The Miners scored the next three points to take the lead once more, 20-17. This time the Braves were not able to respond, and Missouri S&T took the set, 25-21.
  • The Braves took the lead at the start of set three, 5-1. Missouri S&T cut into the Brave lead and were within 6-5. Kills by Francis Rivera and Kadeem Morris gave the Braves a 9-6 lead. The Miners were able to answer with a 5-1 run and led 11-10 over OU. Ottawa scored the next four points to retake the lead, 14-11. The Braves increased its lead to 16-12 on a kill by Younie and a Miner attacking error. Missouri S&T did not go away and tied the set at 16 all. The teams exchanged points and after a Morris kill, OU led 22-21. The Miners scored the three points to take the lead once more, 24-22. Ottawa cut the deficit to one, 24-23 on a Younie kill. The Miners were able to close out the set on the next point to take the 25-23 victory.

How it Happened
  • Brescia took a 9-4 lead over the Braves to open set one. Ottawa was not able to bounce back from its slow start and the Bearcats took the 25-15 victory.
  • Set two went back and forth with Ottawa tying the set at 20 all on an Akeil Williams' kill. Brescia scored the next three points to retake the lead 23-20. Ottawa cut into the Bearcat lead on a Kade Zrna kill, 23-21. OU was not able to get any closer to Brescia and BU took the 25-21 victory.
  • The Braves scored the first six point of set no. 3. Two blocks by Williams gave the Braves a 9-3 lead. Max Baumann's kill pushed the OU lead to 16-8. Brescia did not go away and rallied to get within 22-21 of OU. Ottawa scored the next point on a Grant Younie kill, 23-21. The Bearcats again cut into Ottawa's lead, 23-22. OU was able to score the next two points, taking the 25-22 victory on a Williams kill and an Isaac Rollenhagen service ace.
  • Set four started off much like set two with the set going back and forth. With it tied 14-14, OU was able to put together a 5-2 run to take a 19-15 lead after a kill by Younie. Brescia rallied and tied the set, 21-21. The Braves scored the next three points, two kills by Williams and a block by Nazmi Bayoglu and Williams, to retake the lead 24-21. The Bearcats called a timeout to try to slow down OU but the Braves took the set on the next point, a kill by Williams, 25-22.
  • Ottawa led set five, 4-2, after a service ace by Andrew Salinas. A kill by Bayoglu and a Kade Zrna service ace pushed OU's lead to 8-5. Brescia rallied and tied the set, 9-9. The teams continued to exchange points and the set was tied 14-14. The Braves were able to capture its first win of 2024 by scoring the next two points, kills by Williams and Bayoglu, to take the 16-14 victory.
