Women's Basketball is Upended by Sterling, 71-58

STERLING, Kan. – The Ottawa University women's basketball team fell 71-58 to Sterling College at the Gleason Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Braves scored the first seven points of the game to take the early lead. A basket by Kennedy Bankett with 4:43 on the clock gave OU an 11-5 advantage over the Warriors. Sterling responded with a 12-3 run to end the first, taking a 17-15 lead into the second.

Ottawa opened the second quarter with five points from Bankett to retake the lead 20-18. The Warriors answered with by scoring eight straight points and led 26-20 with 5:50 left in the half.

The Braves did not wilt, putting together a 10-0 run. Katelyn Alatini's 3-pt field goal gave the Braves a 30-28 lead. Sterling quickly answered and with 1:51 on the clock led 32-30 after four straight points by Bailey Young.

That not deter the Braves. OU ended the half on a 4-0 run, thanks to free throws from Jayla Johnson and Bankett, taking a 34-32 lead into the locker room.

In the third, the Braves struggled in the first three and a half minutes to put the ball in the basket. Sterling opened the quarter on a 13-0 run and led 45-34. Ottawa did respond and held Sterling to nine points for the rest of the quarter. Offensively, the Braves chipped away at the Sterling double digit lead. Sydney Scott's basket in the final seconds of third put OU within 53-47 entering the final quarter of play.

The Warriors increased their lead back to doubled figures in the opening minutes of the fourth, 60-49. Ottawa battled and after a 3-pt field goal by Tiyani Rollins, the Braves were within 60-56 with 4:32 left in the game.

That is all the closer the Braves were able to get. Sterling ended the quarter on an 11-2 run, taking the 71-58 victory.
