Women's Basketball is Defeated by (RV) Columbia, 73-62

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Ottawa University women's basketball team was defeated 73-62 by (RV) Columbia College on Sunday afternoon.

The Braves had a 9-5 lead over Columbia in the opening minutes of the first quarter. The Cougar responded with a 7-1 run, taking a 12-10 lead over the Braves. A basket by Janiyah Hendricks tied the game at 12 all. Columbia responded by ending the quarter on an 8-1 run, taking a 20-13 lead into the second.

Columbia increased its lead to 28-19 at the 7:29 mark in the second quarter. Ottawa chipped away at the lead and after a free throw by Dominique Schutte, the Braves were within 28-25. Columbia responded by outscoring OU 8-3 in the final three minutes of the half to take a 35-28 lead into the locker room.

CC pushed its lead to double figures at the start of the third quarter. Ottawa did not go away and cut the Cougar lead to two points, 41-39, on two Katelyn Alatini free throws with 4:23 remaining in the quarter. Columbia increased its lead to six points, 47-41 but OU again cut into the Cougar lead. A basket by Anna Eldridge put OU within one point, 47-46, with 1:57 on the clock. Columbia was able to score the final basket of the quarter, taking a 49-46 lead into the fourth.

Ottawa continued to stay within striking distance of Columbia in the fourth quarter. A basket by Hendricks cut the deficit to 52-50 with 8:18 left in regulation. Columbia scored the next five points, increasing its lead to 57-50. Ottawa responded with an 8-2 run and after two Abbie Sextro free throws, the Braves were within one point, 59-58 with 2:18 on the clock. Ottawa, however, was unable to get over the hump and take its first lead since the first quarter and Columbia took the 73-62 victory.
