STERLING, Kan. – The Ottawa University women's basketball team was defeated 84-77 by Sterling College on Saturday afternoon at the Gleason Center.
Ottawa opened the first quarter with a 10-5 lead over Sterling after two free throws from
Katelyn Alatini. Sterling responded by ending the quarter on a 14-5 run, taking a 19-15 lead over the Braves into the second quarter.
The Braves struggled with Sterling's full court press in the second quarter. The Warriors increased their lead to 10 points, 34-24, with 4:32 left in the first half. The Braves cut the deficit to eight points, 39-31 on two
Sydney Scott free throws. Sterling, however, ended the half by outscoring OU 5-1 in the final 1:23 to take a 44-32 lead into the locker room.
Sterling continued with its full court pressure in the third quarter. Ottawa was not able to cut into the Warrior lead and SC took a 23-point lead, 69-46, into the fourth.
Ottawa opened the fourth on an 8-0 run and cut the deficit to 69-54, on a lay up by Alatini with 8:43 left in regulation. The Braves continued to chip away at the Sterling lead and with 28 seconds on the clock, a 3-pt field goal by
Dominique Schutte put OU within 83-75.
The Braves were forced to foul and Sterling made one of two free throws to take an 84-75 lead.
Anna Eldridge was fouled on a 3-pt field goal attempt. She made two of three free throws and OU was down 84-77 with six seconds on the clock. Ottawa was not able to cut any further into the Sterling lead and the Warriors took the 84-77 victory.
