Box Score WINFIELD, Kan. – The Ottawa University women's basketball team defeated Southwestern College in double overtime 84-78 on Wednesday night in Stewart Field House.
Ottawa scored the first four points of the game to take the early lead. Southwestern responded with a 17-7 run and led 17-11 lead with 2:59 left in the first quarter. A 3-pt field goal by
Tiyani Rollins and two free throws from
Sydney Scott put the Braves within 17-16 with 40 seconds on the clock.
OU, however, was not able to get a defensive stop in the final 11 seconds of the quarter. Southwestern's Macy Pond hit a three, giving the Moundbuilders a 20-16 lead at the start of the second.
In the second quarter Southwestern pushed its lead to double digits and led, 34-22, with 2:24 left in the half. Ottawa ended the second quarter by scoring the final five points of the half and SWC took a 34-27 lead into the locker room.
Southwestern opened the second half with a 10-2 run, taking a 44-29 lead over the Braves with 4:02 left in the third quarter. Ottawa responded with a run of its own, 16-5, and after a basket by
Nayeli Acosta, Ottawa trailed 49-46 after three quarters of play.
A basket by
Abbie Sextro and two free throws from
Dominique Schutte gave OU its first lead since the first quarter, 50-49. The teams exchanged baskets and with 3:16 on the clock, Ottawa led 61-58 on a 3-pt field goal by Schutte.
Southwestern answered with five straight points, taking a 63-61 lead over OU with 36 seconds left in regulation. On the Braves' next offensive possession, Rollins attacked the goal and was fouled with 19 seconds on the clock. She made both free throws, tying the game at 63 all. The Braves came away with a defensive stop and the game went into overtime.
In the first overtime period, Southwestern had a 76-70 lead over the Braves with 1:05 on the clock. Ottawa did not wilt and was within three points with just under 30 seconds left in the game. The Moundbuilders committed a cardinal sin in the game of basketball, fouling a 3-pt shooter. Schutte stepped to the line and made all three of her free throw attempts, tying the game at 77 all with 23 seconds on the clock. OU came up with a defensive stop in the final seconds and the game went into a second overtime.
Ottawa's defense shut down the Moundbuilders in the second overtime period. OU held Southwestern to one point, outscoring the Moundbuilders 7-1. Neither team scored in the second overtime period until
Janiyah Hendricks connected on a three with 1:53 on the clock to give OU the 80-77 lead. The Braves went on to outscore SWC 7-1 in the final two minutes of the game, taking the 84-78 victory.
