Baseball Wins Game One, Falls in Game two to Viterbo

OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University baseball team split its final two games with Viterbo University on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Park. Ottawa won game one, 5-0, but fell 1-0 in game two.

Game One

The Braves broke the 0-0 tie in the bottom of the third inning. Cole Broughton was hit by a pitch. The V-Hawks attempted to pick Broughton off at first but the wild throw by the pitcher moved Broughton to third. As everyone was walking back to their positions, Broughton noticed no one was covering home. He took off and slide across home plate to give OU a 1-0 lead. Dylan Garcia followed that with a single to left and then moved to second with a ground out to third by Blaine Thomas. Brent Swearingen's single to left scored Garcia, giving the Braves a 2-0 lead.

Ottawa increased its lead over Viterbo in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Tyler Farnham singled to left. A balk by the V-Hawk pitcher moved Farnham to second. Johnny Vulcano reached first on an error by the VU second baseman. Farnham was running on contact and scored, pushing the OU lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ottawa pushed two more runs across home plate. Thomas reached first on an error by the V-Hawk right fielder. Swearingen's single to center moved Thomas to third. Thomas and Swearingen then stole home and second, to give OU a 4-0 lead. Marcellus Pearson put the ball in play and reached first on an error by the Viterbo shortstop. Swearingen scored and the Braves had a 5-0 lead.

Viterbo had one player reach base in the sixth and seventh innings, but the OU defense quieted the V-Hawk bats as the Braves took the 5-0 victory.
