Women's Flag Football Opens its NAIA Title Defense on Tuesday at Baker

The Ottawa University women's flag football team captured the program's third straight NAIA Flag Football Finals Championship last May in Atlanta, Ga. OU defeated Thomas University 18-13 in the championship game.

In the championship game, Ottawa finished the game with 275 yards of offense, 36 yards rushing and 239 yards passing. Thomas had negative eight yards rushing, and 306 yards passing for a total of 298 yards of offense. Madysen Carrera rushed for 28 yards. She threw for 235 yards (23-38) and three touchdowns. Addison Orsborn led OU with six receptions for 73 yards and a touchdown. Alyssa Linkous and Tatiana Dos Santos finished the game with four receptions apiece. Linkous had two touchdown receptions. Jazlyn Camacho had three receptions for 51 yards. Faron Malouff led OU with 10 flag pulls. She had two interceptions. Abby Brown had eight flag pulls. Hailee McKay and DeJonice Parris finished with six flag pulls apiece. Parris had two sacks and three flag pulls for loss.

Madysen Carrera, Alyssa Linkous, and Jazlyn Camacho were named to the NAIA All-Tournament Team. This was the second straight season that Carrera and Linkous were named to the team. Linkous was also named the NAIA Championship Game MVP.

Jazlyn Camacho and Addison Orsborn were named to the US National Team roster and competed in the 2023 IFAF Americas Continental Flag Football Championship. They helped the team to a gold medal. Alyssa Linkous was named an alternate to the team.

The OU offense finished 2023 averaging 314.1 yards per game, 56.8 rushing and 257.3 passing. Ottawa scored 36.5 points per game while only allowing 7.4. OU's defense held opponents to 186.8 yards of offense per game, 13.5 rushing and 173.3 passing.

Ottawa's defense led the NAIA in interceptions (40), were first in defensive touchdowns (8), and were first in flag pulls (492).

The Brave defense led the NAIA in scoring (694), points per game (36.5), and total offense (5301). OU was second in the NAIA in passing yards per game (257.3) behind Keiser University (273.3).

Ottawa University assistant coach, Katie Sowers, was named head coach of the Italian women's flag football national team by the FIDAF. She will coach the team as they prepare for the World Championships and to qualify for the World Games.

Madysen Carrera led OU in passing, averaging 231.6 yards per game. She completed 71.9 percent of her passes (392-545) and had 74 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Carrera also led OU in rushing with 817 yards. She averaged 43 rushing yards per game.

Jazlyn Camacho led OU in receiving yards (925) and Alyssa Linkous was the team's leader in receptions (83). Camacho had 20 touchdown receptions and Linkous was right behind her with 18.

Abby Brown led OU with 111 flag pulls. She averaged 5.8 flag pulls per game. Brown also had seven interceptions and nine pass break ups. Susann Kaufmann had 52 flag pulls, 16 sacks, and 18 flag pulls for loss. Hailee McKay led OU with 13 pass break ups. Dejonice Parris was third on the team in flag pulls with 50. She had nine sacks and 12 flag pulls for loss.

Baker University is 1-0 to start is inaugural season. The Wildcats defeated the University of Saint Mary 13-8 on Feb. 14.

In the win, Baker has 202 yards of offense while holding the Spires to 81 yards. Sanija Waller led Baker in passing with 176 yards (16-for-32), 2 touchdowns, and one INT. Waller also led BU in rushing with 12 yards. Kayla Harrison had seven receptions for 100 yards and touchdown. Destiny Martinez was the other Wildcat with a touchdown. She had three receptions for 27 yards.  Lowegyn Hearn led Baker with six flag pulls. She also had one pass break up. Gabriells Zabaletta finished the game with five flag pulls.
