Women's Flag Football Plays Midland in its Home Opener on Saturday

The Braves opened the 2024 season with a 53-6 win over Baker University on Tuesday night at Liston Stadium. Ottawa finished the game with 299 yards of offense, 54 yards rushing and 245 yards passing. The Brave defense held Baker to 212 yards of offense, 39 rushing and 173 passing. OU had four interceptions. Madysen Carrera rushed for 30 yards and scored one rushing touchdown. She went 21-for-26 through the air for 245 yards and seven touchdowns. Jazlyn Camacho led OU with 74 receiving yards. Mandolyn Scalisi led OU with five receptions. She had two receiving touchdowns. Alyssa Gillespie had seven flag pulls. Dejonice Parris and Leilani Caamal had six flag pulls apiece. Parris, Abby Brown, Hailee McKay, and Jukanie Washington each finished the game with an interception.

This season, the Braves are averaging 299 yards of offense per game, 54 yards rushing and 245 yards passing. OU is averaging 53 points per game. Opponents are averaging 212 yards of offense, 39 yards on the ground and 173 yards through the air. They are scoring six points per game.

Madysen Carrera leads OU in passing (21-for-26), averaging 245 yards through the air. She has throw seven touchdowns and is completing 80.8 percent of her passes. Carrera also leads OU in rushing, averaging 30 yards per game. She has one rushing touchdown. Mandolyn Scalisi leads the team in receptions with five. She also leads OU in receiving touchdowns with two. Jazlyn Camacho is the team's leader in receiving yards with 74.

Alyssa Gillespie is OU's leader in flag pulls with seven. Susann Kaufmann and Dejonice Parris have six tackles apiece. Parris leads OU with one sack. Parris, Abby Brown, Haille McKay, and Jukanie Washington have one interception apiece.

Saturday is the 10th meeting between Ottawa University and Midland University. Ottawa leads the series, 9-0. OU went 3-0 against the Warriors last season, defeating MU 35-12 on Mach 25 in Ottawa, 23-6 on April 22 in Fremont, and 34-6 in the first round of the NAIA Women's Flag Football Finals on May 18 in Atlanta, Ga. Ottawa has a record of 4-0 against Midland in Ottawa. The first meeting between the two teams happened on March 26, 2021 in Ottawa. The Braves won the game 39-0.

In the win over Midland on May 18 in Atlanta, Ga., the Braves had 298 yard of offense, 258 yards through the air and 40 yards rushing. Ottawa's defense held Midland to a total of 142 yards, 148 through the air and -6 rushing. Madysen Carrera rushed for 33 yards and passed for 258. She went 22-for-29 through the air and threw five touchdown passes. Alyssa Linkous, Bailey Hodgins, and Addison Orsborn had four receptions apiece. Abby Brown led the Braves with eight tackles and one pass break up. Susann Kaufmann had four tackles, four sacks, and one pass break up. Faron Malouff and Hailee McKay finished the game with three tackles a piece. McKay had two pass break ups.

Saturday is Midland University's season opener. The Warriors had their first three games of the season canceled.

Midland ended the 2023 season with an overall record of 15-7 and a KCAC mark of 6-4. The Warriors ended the season with three straight losses at the NAIA Women's Flag Football Finals: Ottawa (34-6), Campbellsville (32-0), Webber International (20-14).

In 2023, the Warriors finished the season averaging 215.7 yards of offense per game, 21.3 yards rushing and 194.4 yards passing. They averaged 13.6 points per game. Opponents averaged 241 yards of offense per game, 53.3 yards rushing and 187.7 yards passing. They scored 23.4 points per game against the Warriors.

Mikaela Nunez went 120-for-200 through the air for 1,148 yards and eight touchdowns. She threw 11 interceptions. Angel Ioane Kaio led the team in rushing, averaging 32 yards per game. Desenia Barcenas and Dyva Jones had one rushing TD apiece.

Casey Thompson led Midland in receptions with 41. Dyva Jones was the Warriors' leader in receiving yards with 349. She also led them in receiving touchdowns with four.

Casey Thompson was MU's leader in flag pulls with 34. She also had two sacks and one pass break up. Alyssa Butler had 29 flag pulls, two interceptions, and one sack. Allaya Liningston led the team with three interceptions and Dyva Jones led MU in pass break ups with six.
