Men's Volleyball Ends Season With Loss to KWU in GPAC Quarterfinals

SALINA, Kan – The Ottawa University men's volleyball team's season ended on Saturday evening in the GPAC Tournament Quarterfinals with a 3-1; 21-25, 19-25, 26-24, 16-25; loss to Kansas Wesleyan University in Mabee Arena.

How it Happened
  • Ottawa fell behind early to Kansas Wesleyan in set one. The Coyotes jumped out to a 5-1 lead over the Braves. OU rallied and after a kill by Grant Younie, the Braves were within 13-12. KWU pushed its lead to 19-15. Ottawa again cut into the deficit. A service ace by Max Baumann cut the Coyote lead to 19-17. That is all the closer OU would get. Kansas Wesleyan was able to close out the set, taking the 25-21 victory.
  • KWU scored the first three points of set no. 2 but OU rallied, tying the set at 5-5 on a Coyote attacking error. The teams exchanged points. A kill by Nazmi Bayoglu tied the set at 14 all. The Coyotes put together a 4-1 run to take an 18-15 lead. Ottawa tried to chip away at the KWU lead. A kill by Younie put the Braves down two, 20-18. Ottawa was not able to complete the comeback, only scoring one more point the remainder of the set as the Coyotes took the 25-19 victory.
  • The Braves opened with the early lead and after an Akeil Williams kill, OU had the 5-2 advantage in set three. OU continued to increase its lead. A service ace from Bayoglu and a kill by Younie gave OU a 13-8 lead. The Coyotes did not go away and rallied to tie the set, 23-23. A Williams kill gave Ottawa a 24-23 lead. KWU tied the set on the next point, 24-24. The Braves were able to take the set, scoring the final two points, to take the 26-24 victory.
  • The Braves had a 5-3 lead over the Coyotes at the start of set four. Back-to-back attack errors by KWU gave Ottawa an 8-4 lead. Kansas Wesleyan responded with a 15-2 run to take a 19-10 lead over the Braves. Ottawa was not able to answer and KWU took the 25-16 victory.

  • Ottawa finished the match with 49 kills, a .209 attacking percentage, 47 assists, four service aces, 66 digs, and eight team blocks.
  • Akeil Williams finished the match with a double-double. He had 15 kills and 13 digs. Williams also had five blocks.
  • Grant Younie had 11 kills and nine digs. Kadeem Morris had 10 kills, eight digs, and four blocks.
  • Kade Zrna led the Braves with 21 assists. Andrew Salinas had 18 assists.
  • Nazmi Bayoglu tallied 12 digs and Max Baumann had 11 digs.
The Braves finish the season with an overall record of 5-17 and a fifth place finish in the GPAC with a mark of 3-7.
