(RV) Softball Takes Game Two From Tabor

HILLSBORO, Kan. – The (RV) Ottawa University softball team split with Tabor College on Saturday afternoon. Tabor won game one in nine innings, 9-7. The Braves took game two, 13-11.

Game One
The Braves struck first, taking the lead over Tabor in the top of the fourth inning. Addison Spencer singled to left and then moved to second on a ground out to third by Rachel Pederson. Kara Hafenstine doubled down the left field line, scoring Spencer and OU led 1-0.

Ottawa increased its lead over the Bluejays in the top of the fifth. Megan Kennedy singled to left-center and then stole second. Macy Roever singled to center, scoring Kennedy and Ottawa had a 2-0 lead. Roever stole second, giving the Braves a runner in scoring position. Spencer's ground out to first scored Roever, giving Ottawa a 3-0 lead.

Tabor rallied in the bottom of the sixth with three runs, tying the game at three all. Neither team was able to score in the seventh and the game went into extra innings. In the eighth, Ottawa retook the lead with three runs.

Roever grounded out to the pitcher and Macey Morris, who was on second due to the international tie breaker rule, moved to third. Spener's single scored Morris and the Braves had a 4-3 lead. Rachel Pederson's bunt single had runners on the corners for OU. Hafenstine doubled, scoring both Spencer and Pederson to give Ottawa a 6-3 lead.

Tabor answered with three runs of its own and tied the game, 6-6. In the top of the ninth, Ottawa retook the lead. Megan Kennedy singled up the middle, scoring Hammons to give the Braves a 7-6 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, back-to-back doubles by the Bluejays scored two runs and Tabor took the 9-7 victory.

  • Kiara Hafenstine went 3-for-4 at the plate, driving in three runs.
  • Addison Spencer had two hits in four at bats, scoring one run and tallying two RBI.
  • Ashlynn Mecer pitched eight innings, striking out one.
Game Two
The Braves took the lead in the top of the first inning. Macy Roever reached first on a bunt single. Addison Spencer's single to center moved Roever to second. A steal of third by Roever allowed her to score on a wild pitch and OU led 1-0.

Tabor tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, 1-1. Ottawa answered with three runs in the top of the sixth.

Kara Hafenstine led off the inning with home run to left, giving the Braves a 2-1 lead. Nayely Delgado reached first with a single to center. Morgan Bradford hit a home run to left, scoring two and OU led 4-1.

In the top of the seventh, the Braves scored nine runs on 10 hits, taking a 13-1 lead. Tabor tried to rally in its bottom half of the inning. The Bluejays scored 10 runs on 11 hits and three errors but it wasn't enough as OU took the 13-11 victory.

Ottawa (33-13, 17-5) returns to action on Tuesday, April 23 against Southwestern College at Alumni Park. Game one of the double header is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
