Football and Avila Meet at AdventHealth Field on Saturday

The Braves are on a two game winning streak after defeating Bethany College 37-6 in Lindsborg, Kan. Ottawa now has a record of 210-9 when scoring 35 or more points in a game. OU had 377 yards of total offense (280 passing, 97 rushing).

Through nine games this season, Ottawa is averaging 353.6 yards of offense per game and scoring 25.4 points per game (94.9 rushing and 258.7 passing). Opponents are scoring 32 points and averaging 397.1 yards of offense per game (189 rushing and 208.1 passing). 

Luke Edwards leads the Braves in passing. He is 184-316 for 2,201 yards and 12 touchdowns. Edwards is completing 58.2 percent of his passes. Anthony Powell is OU's leader in rushing with 395 yards. He is averaging 4.3 yards per carry and has scored four rushing touchdowns. Jayden Johnson leads the team in receptions with 57 and receiving yards with 746. He is averaging 82.9 receiving yards per game and has three receiving touchdowns. De'Anthony Curtis leads the team in receiving touchdowns with four. Ethan Yinger is OU's leader in tackles with 56. He has 3.5 tackles for loss, four pass break ups, one forced fumble, and one recovered fumble. Teagan Flynn leads the team in tackles for loss (10.5) and sacks (8.5). He has one pass break up. Donovan Martin and Elijah Hann lead the team with two interceptions apiece. 

Jayden Johnson has three 100 yard receiving games this season, those three coming in his last five game. Through his first four games this season, Johnson had 208 receiving yards, an average of 52 receiving yards per game . In his last five games he has 538 receiving yards, an average of 107.6 receiving yards per game. 

Ottawa is ranked 49th in the NAIA in scoring (229), 50th in points per game (25.4), 39th in total offense (3,182), 18th in passing yards (2,328), 23rd in passing yards per game (258.7), 48th in passing yards per attempt (6.9), 41st in first downs (180), 29th in passing first downs (100), 50th in penalty first downs (15), third in third down conversions (61-147), 34th in third down conversion percentage (.410), eighth in fourth down conversions (16-27), 25th in fourth down conversion percentage (.590), 47th in average per punt (36.4), 48th in red zone percentage (.810), third in fumbles recovered (10), 43rd in tackles (545), and 14th in sacks (24).

Saturday is the eighth game between Ottawa University and Avila University. The Eagles lead the series 6-1 and won the game last season in Ottawa, 26-13, on Nov. 2, 2024. OU has never beaten Avila in Ottawa and has a home record of 0-3 against the Eagles. Ottawa's only victory over Avila happened on Oct. 28, 2023 in Kansas City, Mo., 42-17. The first game between Ottawa and Avila happened on Oct. 20, 2018 in Kansas City, Mo. The Eagles, then ranked no. 25 in the NAIA, defeated the Braves 25-21. 

After averaging 23.5 points per game through their first six games of the season and allowing 38.8 points per game, the Braves are now scoring 29.3 points while allowing 18.3 per game in KCAC Kessinger Division play.

Avila University is 1-8 overall, has a KCAC Kessinger Division record of 1-2, is on a two game losing streak, and has a record of 1-4 on the road this season. 

After defeating Bethany in Lindsborg 27-26 on Oct. 18,  the Eagles have lost two straight games with losses to Evangel on Oct. 25 (58-0) and Bethel on Nov. 1 (35-25). 

Through nine games this season, the Avila offense is averaging 249.4 yards per game (83.6 rushing and 165.9 passing). The Eagles are scoring 12 points per game. Opponents are scoring 44.7 points per game and averaging 450.2 yards of offense (223.8 rushing and 226.4 passing). 

Avila has three quarterbacks that has thrown two touchdown passes apiece: Francisco Beltran, Duce Taylor, and Christian Neely. Beltran leads the Eagles in passing with 730 yards. He is 66-for-120 through the air, completing 50 percent of he passes and has thrown three interceptions. Quentin Curtis leads AU in rushing with 519 yards on 130 carries. He is averaging 4.0 yards per carry and has scored five rushing touchdowns. Mecoast Vaughn is the Eagles' leader in receptions with 26. He has one receiving touchdown and is averaging 38.1 receiving yards per game. Seth Myers leads Avila in receiving touchdowns with three. Joshua Robinson leads the Eagles in tackles with 71. He has 2.5 tackles for loss and one forced fumble. Shamar Scruggs is Avila's leader in interceptions (2). He is second on the team in tackles with 56, has two pass break ups, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovered. 

The Eagles are ranked 47th in the NAIA in recovered fumbles (5), second in punts (60-2256), and 40th in average per punt (37.6). 

In the first six games this season, Avila did not score more than 20 points in a single game. That has changed in the last three games. The Eagles have scored 20 or more points in two out of their last three games played. Avila scored 27 points in the win over Bethany (27-26) on Oct. 18 and 25 points in the loss (35-25) to Bethel on Nov. 1.
