Omaha, NEB. - The Ottawa track and field teams concluded their indoor season at the KCAC championship held at The College of St. Mary in Omaha, Nebraska. The men's team finished in 6th place with 48.5 points, and the women took 4th place with 80.5 points.
In day 1 of the competition,
Hadyn Bieling started the Braves' scoring efforts with a massive personal record in the long jump of 7.02m (23 feet, 1/2 inch)- good for second place.
Daniel Campbell finished 7th with a jump of 6.6m (21 feet, 7.75 inches).
Shortly after the men jumped,
Jordyn Weems led the OU women to a total of 21 team-points in the long jump event. Weems became the KCAC indoor champion with her leap of 5.7m (18 feet, 8.5 inches). JahNisha Campbell finished 3rd with a personal record jump of 5.44m (17 feet, 10.25 inches). Right behind her in 4th place was Aba Sam, with a jump of 5.37m (17 feet, 7.5 inches).
In the women's shot put, Kena Leonard scored 6 points for OU with her 3rd place throw of 12.5m (41 feet).
Both the men's and women's 4x800m relay teams scored day-1 points for the Braves. The women's team of JahNisha Campbell, Tanzania Barnes,
JayOnna Perry, and Arianna Mastin finished in 8th place while the men's team of Matthias Bessey, Braydon Moore, Alijah Centeio, and
Brendon Fuller finished 7th.
The remainder of the first day's events were the preliminaries of the 60m hurdles, 60m dash, and 200m dash, as well as pole vault and the 5000m run.
Day 2 featured the sprint finals as well as a number of other events in which the Braves added to their point totals. In the triple jump,
Daniel Blount secured 4 team points for Ottawa with his 5th place jump of 13.69m (44 feet, 11 inches), while Aba Sam scored 10 more points for the women and became the KCAC triple jump champion with a personal best jump of 11.63m (38 feet, 1.75m).
While points were being scored in the triple jump on one side of the facility, the Braves were racking up points in the high jump on the other side.
JayOnna Perry finished in 3rd place, clearing 1.57m (5 feet, 1.75 inches), JahNisha Campbell finished in 4th with a jump of 1.52m (4 feet, 11.75 inches), and
Saraiah Ervin cleared 1.42m (4 feet 8 inches) to finish 8th.
Hadyn Bieling earned 2 more points for the men with his 7th place finish in the high jump.
After the field events concluded, Isaiah Schell started the scoring in the running events for the men with his 3rd place finish in the 600m run, earning the team 6 points.
JayOnna Perry got the Lady Braves rolling in the running events with her 4th place finish in the 60m hurdles, netting the Braves 5 points. Shortly after,
Jordyn Weems took 7th in the 60m dash to add 2 more points.
In the men's 60m dash,
Domonic Atkinstall shocked the field by winning the 60m championship and 10 team points with a personal-best time of 6.93 seconds.
Daniel Campbell added 2 more points with a 7th place finish.
In the 400 meters,
Jordyn Weems took 2nd for the women and scored 8 more points while
Xavier Garza scored 4 points for the men with a 5th place finish and Isaiah Schell added another point by finishing 8th.
The last individual scorers for the Braves were the 200 meter runners, where
Jordyn Weems added another 5 points with a 4th place finish, and
Domonic Atkinstall also finished 4th to score points.
The final points of the day came in the relays, with the men's Distance Medley Relay of
Brendon Fuller,
Cameron Jackson, Alijah Centeio, and Matthias Bessey securing 2 points and a 7th place finish. Matthias Bessey ran the mile leg of the DMR, and with virtually no rest, he then joined the men's 4x400m relay and helped them to an 8th place finish and another point toward the team total. Bessey was joined in the 4x400 by
Domonic Atkinstall, Isaiah Schell, and Jaden Thatcher.
The nightcap came when the women's 4x400m relay team made a heroic effort to defend last year's KCAC 4x400m championship, with JahNisha Campbell, Tanzania Barnes,
JayOnna Perry, and
Jordyn Weems holding off an aggressive effort by the teams from Evangel and St Mary. The Braves not only defended their crown, but also earned their second straight trip to the NAIA National Championship in two weeks.
Jordyn Weems' spectacular weekend and 27.5 total points earned her the title of KCAC Athlete of the Meet. That title has been held by a member of the OU track and field team for 5-straight conference championships.
