Men's Basketball Ends Season With Double OT Loss to Bethel, 88-84

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. – The Ottawa University men's basketball's season ended with a KCAC Tournament Quarterfinal loss on Wednesday night, double overtime, to Bethel College in Thresher Gymnasium, 88-84.

Ottawa opened the game on a 17-4 run. Bethel chipped away at the Brave lead and with 9:18 left in the first half, were within 17-13 of OU. Ottawa was able to extend its lead and after free throws by Landyn Tyler and Deondre Buggage, OU had an eight point lead, 21-13.

The Threshers responded with a 9-1 run, tying the game at 22 all with 5:32 left in the first half. Ottawa retook the lead on a three by Keith Robinson. Payton Kaiser's three with 4:03 on the clock gave OU a 28-22 lead.

Bethel's basket with 3:40 remaining in the half cut the Brave lead to 28-24. Ottawa answered by finishing the half on an 8-2 run, taking a 35-26 lead into the locker room.

The Threshers opened the second half on a 9-2 run, cutting OU's lead to 37-35. The Braves answered with a run of their own, 16-5, to push its lead back to double digits, 53-40.

Bethel responded with a 12-1 run, cutting Ottawa's lead to one, 53-52, with 9:10 left in regulation. Ottawa answered with a 3-pt play by Robinson, a basket by Buggage, and a three from Najee Jones to take a 61-52 lead.

BC did not go away. The Threshers rallied and tied the game at 69 all with 1:05 on the clock. Ottawa retook the lead on its next offensive possession, a Jones' basket, 71-69. The Braves were unable to get a defensive stop on Bethel's next trip down the floor. Carmelo Yakubu's basket with 35 seconds on the clock tied the game, 71-71.

The Braves had two looks at the basket in the final 35 seconds of regulation but were unable to score and the game went into overtime.

In the first overtime period, OU led 82-77 after a Robinson field goal with 1:21 on the clock. Bethel scored the final five points, sending the game into a second overtime period tied at 82 all.

Jones scored the first basket of the second overtime period to give the Braves an 84-82 lead. The Threshers tied the game on a basket by Yakubu with 2:48 on clock. Bethel took its first lead of the game, 86-84, on a basket by Nick Bonner with 1:28 left in the game. Ottawa was unable to score in the final minute of the contest and were forced to foul. Yakubu made both free throws and the Threshers took the 88-84 victory.

  • OU had four players in double figures led by Najee Jones double-double. He had 24 points and 15 rebounds. Jones also had two assists, one block and two steals.
  • Keith Robinson scored 17 points, Deondre Buggage finished the game with 16 points, and Trey Twa had 11 points.
  • Buggage led the Braves with six assists.
  • Jayden Hibbitt was OU's leader in steals with four.
Ottawa finishes the season with an overall record of 18-11 and a fifth place finish in the KCAC.
