Baseball Downs Central Baptist

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Ottawa University baseball team took the series with Central Baptist College with a double header sweep of the Mustangs on Saturday afternoon. Ottawa won game one, 5-4, and took game two, 8-5.

Game One
The Mustangs struck first, taking a 2-0 lead over the Braves in the bottom of the first inning. Ottawa cut into the lead with a run in the top of the second. Jaquavius Davis hit a home run to center field, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Ottawa tied the game in the top of the third. Julius Ryan connected on his first home run of the season to tie the game at two all.

In the top of the fourth, the Braves took their first lead of the game. Cole Broughton doubled to center and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Shaun Gomez, Jr. hit a home run to center and OU had a 4-2 lead.

The Braves increased their lead in the top of the fifth inning. Nicholas Sizemore hit a home run to left and the Braves had a 5-2 lead.

The Mustangs cut into the Brave lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth home runs, 5-4. Ottawa closed out the game in the bottom of the seventh. Cameron Sistrunk recorded his second straight save with a strike out, a fly out, and a strike out to give OU the 5-4 victory.

Inside the Box Score Game Two
Ottawa scored first, taking the early lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. Julius Ryan walked and then advanced to third on a single to right by Nicholas Sizemore. Cole Broughton reached first on an error by the CBC second baseman. That miscue scored Ryan and the Braves had a 1-0 lead. Jaquavius Davis reached first on a fielder's choice. Donald Rhyne, in as a courtesy runner for Sizemore, scored and the Braves led 2-0. Davis then scored on a wild pitch and Ottawa led 3-0.

In the top of the third Ottawa increased its lead over Central Baptist. Shaun Gomez, Jr. hit a home run to center to give the Braves a 4-0 lead.

Central Baptist cut into the Brave lead with two runs in the bottom of the third, 4-2. Ottawa earned one of those back in the top of the fourth. Owen Powers entered the lineup as a pinch hitter for Brian Parry. He connected on his first home run as a Brave and OU took a 5-2 lead.

The Mustangs were able to score one run in the bottom of the fourth and one in the bottom of the fifth to cut OU's lead to 5-4. The Braves were able to extend their lead in the top of the sixth. Robby Williams, pinch hitting for Branden Franz, hit a home run over the left field wall and OU had a 6-4 lead.

OU extended its lead over the Mustangs in the top of the seventh. Ryan walked and then swiped second. Sizemore moved him 90 feet from home with a ground out to first. Broughton's single to center scored Ryan and Ottawa had a 7-4 lead. OU scored its final run of the game on a Jaquavius Davis home run and OU took the lead 8-4.

In the bottom of the seventh, CBC scored one run and the Braves took the 8-5 victory.

Ottawa (7-1) returns to the diamond on Friday, Feb. 14 to start KCAC play with Southwestern College at Alumni Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
