Women's Flag Football Moves Past Kansas Wesleyan, 26-18

OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University women's flag football team opened KCAC play with a 26-18 victory over Kansas Wesleyan University at AdventHealth Field on Saturday afternoon.

KWU received the ball to start the game and the OU defense came away with a turnover on downs. The OU offense put together a four play, 70 yard drive that ended in a touchdown pass from Madysen Carrera to Marley Spielberg. The extra point attempt was no good and OU led 6-0 with 2:21 left in the first quarter.

The Braves' defense stopped KWU for a second straight possession, forcing a KWU punt and with 11:47 to go in the half, the OU offense took over on its own 36 yard line.

Ottawa moved the ball down the field, nine plays and 44 yards, ending the drive with a second touchdown pass from Carrera to Spielberg. The extra point attempt was unsuccessful, and OU led 12-0 with 5:29 remaining in the first half.

On the Coyotes' third offensive possession fo the game, KWU put the ball in the endzone. The Coyotes ended its nine play, 66 yards drive with a touchdown pass from Chihiro Iwata to Alexis Jimenez. The extra point attempt was no good and the Braves led 12-6 with 2:21 left in the half.

The Braves answered KWU's touchdown pass with one of their own. Ottawa dinked and dunked the ball down the field, stepping out of bounds to stop the clock on 6-of-7 pass attempts. The eighth pass attempt of the drive ended in a 24 yard touchdown pass from Carrera to Addison Orsborn. The extra point attempt was good and OU took a 19-6 lead into the locker room.

Ottawa received the ball to start the second half and extended its lead over the Coyotes. The Braves put together a seven play, 66 yard scoring drive that ended in a Carrera touchdown pass to Tatiana Dos Santos. The extra point attempt was good and the Braves led 26-6 with 9:15 to go in the third quarter.

The Coyotes responded with a 13 play, 66 yard drive. Iwata threw a seven yard touchdown pass to Jazmine Whitfield. The extra point attempt was no good and OU's lead was cut to 26-12 at the 1:35 mark of the third quarter.

The Braves were forced to punt on their next offensive possession and KWU took over with 11:02 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Coyotes were able to cut into the Brave lead with a five yard touchdown pass from Iwata to Aliyah Wood. KWU went for two but could not convert and OU led 26-18 with 4:39 left in the game.

KWU never saw the ball again. The OU offense retained possession for the final 4:39 of the contest, running out the clock to take the 26-18 victory.

  • OU finished the game with 324 yards of offense, 36 yards passing and 288 yards through the air. Kansas Wesleyan had 290 yards of offense, 278 yards passing and 12 yards rushing.

  • Alyssa Linkous led OU with seven receptions. Tatiana Dos Santos finished the game with a team high 65 yards.
