Softball Downs Bethel

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. – The Ottawa University softball team swept Bethel College on Saturday afternoon. The Braves took game one 7-1 and game two, in six innings, 11-2.

Game One
The Braves struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Kara Hafenstine reached first on an error by the Thresher second baseman. She moved to second on a stolen base. Macy Roever put the ball in play and Hafenstine scored on a fielder's obstruction to give OU a 1-0 lead. Addison Spencer scored Roever with a ground out to second and OU had a 2-0 lead.

Ottawa extended its lead in the top of the second inning. Mallory Dunn singled to left. Hafenstine walked, moving Dunn to second. Roever scored Dunn with a single to right and the Braves lead 3-0. Bethel cut into the Brave lead with a run in the bottom of the third, 3-1

After a scoreless third and fourth inning, OU extended its lead over the Threshers in the top of the fifth.

Spencer led the inning off with a double to center. Emma Melvin scored her with a home run to right center on a 1-1 count and OU led 5-1. Katie Enneking walked and moved to second on a BC miscue. Mallory Dunn put the ball in play, scoring Enneking from third and OU led 6-1.

The Braves pushed one run across home plate in the top of the seventh. Hafenstine's triple to right-center scored Dunn and OU led 7-1.

It was three up and three down for the OU defense in the bottom of the seventh and OU took the 7-1 victory.

Inside the Box Score Game Two
Ottawa took the lead in the top of the first inning. Kara Hafenstine reached first in an error by the Bethel second baseman. Macy Roever moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt and Hafenstine advanced to third with a ground out to shortstop by Addison Spencer. Emma Melvin scored her with a single up the middle and OU had a 1-0 lead.

The Braves increased their lead in the top of the second inning. Davanie Medina was hit by a pitch. Megan Kennedy tripled to center, scoring Medina and the Braves led 2-0.

OU broke open the game in the top of the third inning. Roever reached first with an infield single and then stole second. Spencer scored her with a triple to left, giving OU a 3-0 lead. Melvin's ground out to second scored Spencer and the Braves led  4-0. Katie Enneking doubled to left-center and advanced to third with a ground out to short by Medina. Alex Genty reached first on a walk and then swiped second. Enneking and Genty scored on an error by the Bethel shortstop and OU had a 6-0 lead. Bethel scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut into the Brave lead, 6-2.

The Braves increased their lead over Bethel in the top of the fifth inning. Medina singled to right and moved to second on a ground out by Genty. Mallory Dunn scored her with a double to left, increasing the OU lead to 7-2.

Ottawa pushed four more runs across home plate in the top of the sixth. Roever tripled down the right field line. Spencer doubled to left, scoring Roever and the Braves led 8-2. After a BC pitching change, Katie Enneking hit an infield single and OU had two on. Medina tripled to left-center, scoring two and Ottawa had a 10-2 lead. Ottawa scored its final run of the inning on Genty's bunt single and Ottawa had an 11-2 lead.
 
The OU defense held the Threshers scoreless in the bottom of the sixth and the Braves took the 11-2 victory.

Ottawa (18-16, 8-4) returns to Alumni Park on Wednesday, April 2 against Avila University. Game one of the double header is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
