Softball Splits With Avila

OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University softball team split its double header with Avila University on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Park. The Braves took game one, 5-2, while the Eagles won game two, 5-3.

Game One
The Braves scored first, pushing three runs across home plate in the bottom of the first inning. Kara Hafenstine walked and then stole second. Macy Roever scored her with a double to center and the Braves had a 1-0 lead. Addison Spencer followed that with a single to center, scoring Roever to give OU a 2-0 lead. The Braves scored their final run of the inning on an Eagle miscue. Spencer scored on an error by the AU first baseman and OU led 3-0.

Avila cut into the Brave lead with a run in the top of the second inning, 3-1. Ottawa earned that run back plus one more in the bottom of the second.

Mallory Dunn led off the inning with her second home run of the year, giving OU a 4-1 lead. Ottawa scored its final run of the inning on an error by the AU second baseman and the Braves led 5-1.

The Eagles scored one run in the top of the fifth to cut the Brave lead to 5-2. Ottawa's defense held Avila scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings, taking the 5-2 victory.

Inside the Box Score Game Two
Ottawa took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Kara Hafenstine doubled to left field and then moved to third on a wild pitch. Addison Spencer scored her with a single to left, giving the Braves a 1-0 lead.

Avila answered with a run in the top of the second, tying the game at one apiece. The Eagles scored three runs in the top of the fourth and one in the top of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead over OU.

The Braves tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh. Hafenstine singled to left and swiped second. Roever scored her with a triple to right and OU was down 5-2. After an AU pitching change, Roever scored on a wild pitch and the Braves trailed 5-3. OU, however, was unable to complete the comeback and Avila took the 5-3 victory.

Inside the Box Score
  • Alex Genty, Davanie Medina, and Kara Hafenstine had two hits apiece for the Braves.
  • Cesara Roque pitched four innings, striking out one.

Ottawa (19-17, 9-5) returns to the diamond on Sunday, April 6 at Alumni Park against Bethany College. Game one of the double header is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
