Softball Shutouts Bethany

OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University softball team swept Bethany College on Sunday afternoon. The Braves won game one, 2-0 and game two, 5-0.

Game One
Ottawa broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning. Macy Roever reached first on a bunt single and then stole second. Addison Spencer's ground out put Roever 60 feet from home. Emma Melvin scored Roever with a single to right and the Braves had a 1-0 lead.

The Braves increased their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Megan Kennedy tripled to right. Kara Hafenstine scored her with a sacrifice bunt, giving OU a 2-0 lead.

OU did not allow a Swede to reach base the remainder of the game, taking the 2-0 victory.

Inside the Box Score
  • Macy Roever was 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring one run. She also had two stolen bases.
  • Lanie Becker earned the victory, striking out one and only allowing one hit.
Game Two
The Braves took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Kara Hafenstine led off the Braves with a single to left. She then stole second, giving OU a runner in scoring position. Macy Roever's bunt single moved Hafenstine to third. Roever stole second and OU had two runners in scoring position. Hafenstine scored on a wild pitch and the Braves had a 1-0 lead. Emma Melvin singled to center, scoring Roever and OU led 2-0.

Ottawa pushed a run across home plate in the bottom of the fifth inning. Roever tripled to right. Addison Spencer singled up the middle, scoring Roever to increase the OU lead to 3-0.

OU scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Walks by Alex Genty and Megan Kennedy gave OU runners on first and second. After the Swede pitching change, Hafenstine walked to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Genty to give the Braves a 4-0 lead. Roever scored Kennedy with a bunt single and Ottawa took the lead and the game, 5-0.

  • Macy Roever was 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring two runs and driving in another.
  • Cesara Roque pitched seven innings to get the complete game victory. She struck out two.

Ottawa (21-17, 11-5) returns to the diamond on Tuesday, April 8 at Sterling College. First pitch of the double header is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
