MARSHALL, Mo. – The Ottawa University men's volleyball team upset the no. 1 seed in the Heart Men's Volleyball Tournament and no. 3 in the NAIA, Missouri Valley College, on Saturday afternoon, 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23).
How it Happened
- Missouri Valley took the early lead in set one. Ottawa rallied and after a kill by Petar Lazie and a MVC attacking error, the Braves lead 14-13. The Vikings did not go away and tied the set at 19 all. A kill by Macort Pickup gave OU a 20-19 lead. The teams exchanged points, and OU had a 21-20 lead on a Pickup kill. MVC tied the set on the next point, 21-21. The Braves answered with four straight points, taking the set on a kill by Lazic, 25-21.
- MVC opened set two with a 3-1 lead. Ottawa rallied, taking an 8-6 lead over the Vikings. Missouri Valley answered with a 6-3 run to take a 14-11 lead over the Braves. Ottawa responded with a run of its own, 6-0, to take a 17-14 lead on a block by Horia Filpisan and Akeil Williams. The Vikings did not go away and cut OU's lead to 22-21. A kill by Pickup gave OU a 23-21 lead. MVC scored the next two points, tying the set at 23 all. The Braves answered with two straight points, taking the 25-23 victory.
- The Braves took a 14-7 lead over Missouri Valley in set no. 3. The Vikings rallied, outscoring the Braves 12-2 to take a 19-16 lead over OU. Ottawa was unable to respond and MVC took the 25-20 victory.
- A MVC attacking error gave the Braves a 5-4 lead over the Vikings in set four. Back-to-back kills by Lazic gave OU a 10-8 lead. The Vikings rallied, taking a 15-13 lead. Ottawa scored the next two points, tying the set at 15-15, on a block by Filpisan. MVC answered with two runs of its own, taking a 17-15 lead. The Braves scored the next six points, taking a 21-17 lead on a block by Kadeem Morris and Pickup. The Vikings put together a run of their own, taking a 22-21 lead over OU. Ottawa scored the next three points, taking a 24-22 lead on a block by Morris. The Vikings cut into the Brave lead, 24-23. Ottawa took the set and the match on the next point, a Viking service error, 25-23.
