Women's Flag Football Downs Kansas Wesleyan, 40-26

SALINA, Kan. – The Ottawa University women's flag football team ended the regular season with a 40-26 victory over Kansas Wesleyan University on Tuesday evening.

The OU defense set the tone on the first series, forcing a KWU punt and OU took over on its own 37 yard line. Five plays later the Braves were in the end zone. Madysen Carrera thew a 15 yard touchdown pass to Alyssa Linkous and OU had a 6-0 lead.

The Braves forced another KWU punt and Ottawa took over on its own 13 yard line. Just like the first drive, this one ended in a touchdown for the Braves. Carrera threw a six yard touchdown pass to Marley Spielberg, giving OU a 12-0 lead.

On the Coyotes third offensive possession of the game, they cut into the Brave lead. KWU put together an 11 play, 66 yard drive that ended in a touchdown. The extra point was good and Ottawa led 12-7 with seven minutes to go in the first half.

It did not take long for the Braves to answer. Carrera ended the drive with a four yard touchdown pass to Addison Orsborn. The extra point attempt by Carrera was good and OU led 19-7.

The OU defense came away with a takeaway on the Coyotes next offensive possession. On the seventh play of the drive, Cynthia Homs intercepted the ball and returned it 63 yards for the touchdown. The Carrera extra point attempt was good and OU took a 26-7 lead into the locker room.

The Braves extended their lead on their first offensive possession of the second half. OU put together a 10 play, 66 yard scoring drive that ended in a touchdown pass from Carrera to Jazlyn Camacho. Carrera's extra point attempt was good and OU led 33-7.

KWU cut into OU's lead on its first possession of the second half, scoring on a 11 play drive and the Braves led 33-13.

OU answered with an eight play, 66 yard scoring drive that ended in a touchdown pass from Carrera to Alyssa Gillespie.  The extra point attempt was no good and with 4:42 left in the fourth, Ottawa led 40-13.

The Coyotes crossed the goal line twice in the final four minutes of the game and the Braves took the 40-26 victory.

  • The Braves finished the game with 319 yards of offense, 292 yards trough the air and 27 yards on the ground. KWU had a total of 309 yards passing and 25 yards rushing for a total of 334 yards of offense.

  • Jazlyn Camacho had five receptions for 39 yards.

The Braves will now compete in the KCAC Tournament on Friday, April 25 and Saturday April 26 at the KC Current Practice Facility in Riverside, Mo. OU play the University of Saint Mary on Friday at 1:00 p.m.
