Softball Takes Down Southwestern

WINFIELD, Kan. – The Ottawa University softball team took two from Southwestern College on Tuesday afternoon. The Braves won game one, 8-0, and took game two in six innings, 11-2.

Game One
Ottawa took the lead in the top of the first inning. Macy Roever was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a stolen base. Addison Spencer reached first on an error by the SWC center fielder and Roever scored, giving the Braves a 1-0 lead. Zoe Butts scored Spencer with a triple, increasing the OU lead to 2-0.

OU increased its lead in the top of the fifth inning. Alex Genty doubled. A triple by Megan Kennedy scored Genty, giving the Braves a 3-0 lead. Kara Hafenstine increased the OU lead with a sacrifice bunt and OU had a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the seventh, the Braves were able to put the game out of reach. Kennedy singled and then moved to second with a single by Hafenstine. Roever scored Kennedy with a double and the Braves had a 5-0 lead. Butts followed that double with one of her own, scoring two and Ottawa led 7-0. Ottawa scored its final run of the inning on a double by Mallory Dunn and OU took an 8-0 lead.

It was three up and three down for the OU defense in the bottom of the eighth and the Braves took the 8-0 victory.

Inside the Box Score
  • Davanie Medina and Zoe Butts had three hits apiece.
  • Butts led the Braves with three RBI.
  • Lanie Becker pitched the shut out, striking out one and only allowing one hit.
Game Two
The Braves took the lead in the top of the first inning. Macy Roever singled and then stole second. Addison Spencer scored Roever with a double, giving the Braves a 1-0 lead. Zoe Butts tripled, scoring Spencer and OU had a 2-0 lead. Ottawa scored its final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Mallory Dunn. She scored Butts, giving Ottawa a 3-0 lead.

Ottawa increased its lead in the top of the third. Back-to-back singles by Kara Hafenstine and Roever led off the inning for OU. Butts scored Hafenstine and Roever and OU lead 5-0.

OU pushed two more runs across home plate in the top of the fourth. Alex Genty was hit by a pitch. Elizabeth Palmer doubled, moving Genty to third. Hafenstine scored both Genty and Palmer to give the Braves a 7-0 lead.

Southwestern cut into OU's lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth, 7-1. Ottawa earned that run back in the top of the fifth. Tori Farnham hit a pinch hit double and then scored with a double by Genty to give the Braves an 8-1 lead.

The Moundbuilders scored another run in the bottom of the fifth to cut OU's lead to 8-2. Ottawa answered in the top of the sixth. Megan Kennedy doubled and then stole third. Hafenstine scored her with a single and the Braves led 9-2. Spencer's sacrifice fly to center scored Hafenstine, increasing the OU lead to 10-2. Ottawa scored its final run of the inning on a RBI single by Butts and OU had an 11-2 lead.
Southwestern had a player reach base but the Braves did not allow them to extend the game and Ottawa took the 11- 2 victory.

Inside the Box Score
  • Zoe Butts and Kara Hafenstine had three hits apiece. Butts drove in four runs and scored one. Hafenstine drove in three runs and scored two.
  • Cesara Roque pitched four innings, striking out one.
